Close Race? McLaren P1 and 650S Battle It Out

The McLaren P1 boasts performance matched by very few cars currently roaming this earth, so it comes as a surprise to see why this race is being heralded as a “close one.” The reality is, it was actually close for the first part of the race, but quite quickly the P1’s almighty engine surges past the 650S.

So what happened here? Well, it quite simply comes down to traction. The 650S has rubber that isn’t overwhelmed by the engine’s power, whereas in the P1, the task of putting down 900 horsepower is asking too many favors from the tires, even in the most ideal conditions.

Does this mean that if you find yourself in the unlikely position of pulling up next to a P1 at a stop light, that you might actually have a shot at winning? Hate to break it to you, but probably not (plus, speed is piled on so rapidly, it would be really an automotive sin to street race one). If this video highlights anything, it is the prowess of the 650S to really lunge off the line. It might be the peasant’s car compared to the P1, but it’ll still put up a fight.
