The beatniks at BayAreaRacing caught up with a Bugatti Veyron owner recently at a Shift-S3ctor event, and they captured the raw top speed video below. They do a great job with shooting the action too, with well placed wide-angle cameras offering orienting scenes and bright California sunshine illuminating every detail. You can clearly see the Bugatti moving, even from a long distance away, as it accelerates through neck-working speeds.

This Shift-S3ctor event was held at a closed course equipped with a half-mile top speed run, which looks like a proper airfield. At the beginning of the Veyron’s top-speed run, the cameraman moves in close to the starting line so you can hear that Bugatti-VW quad-turbo W16 gasoline engine rip off the line. From launch up to a top speed of 172 mph, it’s stunningly quiet, especially for a car pushing upwards of 1000 hp.

Even 50 years ago, no Formula 1 or Le Mans team could imagine that kind of power and calm resonance. Sure the owner has a host of electronically controlled aftermarket exhaust systems to install for more gurgle, but the gentlemanly thing to do is leave the purr and enjoy the power.
