Bugatti’s Sky View provides extra interior light and extra headroom in the 1,500-horsepower hypercar.
The Bugatti Chiron is an incredible performance car, with the quad-turbocharged, 16-cylinder engine delivering 1,500 horsepower and 1,180 lb-ft of torque. With the help of the aerodynamic body and the advanced all-wheel-drive system, the Chiron can reach an electronically limited top speed of 261 miles per hour, but more importantly, the newest Bugatti can get from a stop to 250 miles per hour and back down to a stop in just 41.96 seconds, making it the quickest vehicle in the world to get to that speed and stopped. Those numbers also make the Chiron faster than the Veyron that it replaced.
The one thing that the Bugatti Chiron does not do that the Veyron could is offering open-air driving. The Veyron was offered in Grand Sport form with a removable top, but the Chiron is only offered as a fixed-roof coupe. Fortunately, the Italian hypercar company recently announced the immediate availability of the new Sky View option, essentially offering a dual fixed moonroof in the 1,500-horsepower machine.
Sky View
Sky View in the Bugatti Chiron is basically two fixed moonroof panels, each of which measures 65-centimeters long and 44-centimeters wide (25.6 inches long by 17.3 inches wide). Each panel is comprised of a thin layer of glass and four “intermediate layers”, all of which work together to cut down on exterior noise, the sun’s harmful rays and glare while giving the driver and passenger a clear view of the sky. Also, where the moonroof systems reduce the structural rigidity of some performance cars, the Chiron’s Sky View system actually improves the stiffness of the roof of the 1,500-horsepower Bugatti.
Added View and Space
In many cases, when an automaker adds glass roof feature, it often cuts into headroom, but with the Chiron, the Sky View dual fixed moonroof system actually adds head space. This means that anyone who is taller or who needs more headroom for a helmet may find the Sky View system to be a great option, as not only does it allow more natural light into the cockpit of the Chiron, but it also makes the hypercar roomier.
If you are considering ordering a Bugatti Chiron right now, you are in luck, as the Sky View system is available for order right now, with our first real-world look at the glass roof treatment for the multi-million dollar car coming at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event later this month.
"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.
"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.
"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.
"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.
"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.
