Having a Beater Car You Don’t Need to Worry About Improves Nice-Car Ownership

Having a nice car is a great thing. Your expensive and fun exotic or classic is a great way to enjoy motoring. But that ownership doesn’t come without worries. You have to worry about having the car parked somewhere, you have to worry about other people on the road, you have to worry about exorbitant insurance and fuel costs. Don’t ditch the nice car, but how about getting a beater to drive along with it?

This Car Throttle video highlights the many benefits of cheap-car ownership. But it does so on the premise that it saves you money for the car you want. The thing is, you probably already have the car you want. So why still get a cheap one?

Luxury means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. But for some, luxury is not having to worry. A cheap car is very luxurious in that regard, because you don’t worry about it when you are out and about.

You can park it wherever you want. There’s no need to worry about door dings or scratching the wheels. One could argue that scratches and dings add character even, which is something cheap, beater cars have in spades.

Plus, we all know how awesome it is to drive rental cars, right? Since they’re not our cars we often drive them in ways that no car would normally be driven. With a cheap beater car, you can drive like a lunatic on public roads, while still being well within the speed limit. Try doing that in your McLaren.

Of course, you’re going to want to make sure you pick a reliable beater car. Yes, you’ll just send it to the scrap heap if something goes wrong, but you also don’t want to be stranded somewhere if you can avoid it.

But for us car people, having a car that we can use solely as an appliance is a luxury that’s hard to duplicate, especially while still being able to enjoy our nice car whenever we want. That seems like a big win to us!
