Audi’s compact crossover sweeps all three of the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program’s battery of crash tests with flying colors.

If you’re not lucky enough to live in eternally warm places like Miami, Austin, or Los Angeles, your ride usually spends the winter in the climate-controlled garage. Luckily, there are many options out there for those who want to ride in style during the colder months, especially if you want to share the ride with your family.

One of those options happens to be the Audi Q3. The compact crossover can not only handle whatever winter and the city streets throw at it, but it also can keep everyone you love safe from the worst. In fact, the 2019 and 2020 models recently swept all of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s trio of crash tests used in the agency’s New Car Assessment Program.

When it comes to surviving impacts from the front and sides, as well as rollovers, the Q3 performed well above the rest. The crossover earned four stars in frontal crash and rollover testing, and a full five stars for side impacts. The overall result is a five-star rating for Audi’s smallest Q series ride.

The NHTSA also praised the Q3 for its suite of safety systems, known by Audi as Pre-Sense. The crossover comes with the base suite as standard, which includes turn assist, adaptive cruise control and assist, active lane assist, and front pedestrian collision detection.

When the worst does happen, though, Audi’s Pre-Sense lives up to its name. Before the point of impact, the side windows and sunroof are closed, and the driver and front passenger seat belts are pre-tensioned. Crashes are scary enough as is, so it’s wonderful for Audi to mitigate as much damage as possible when the worst does happen.

And of course, we can’t forget Audi’s venerable Quattro all-wheel drive system. All of the 228 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque from the 2.0-liter turbo-four are routed to the corners where they’re needed, whether the roads are dry or covered in snow. Put it all together, and the Q3 is the perfect package for the coldest of days.
