Aston Martin Hacks Roof off DB11

Aston Martin Hacks Roof off DB11

The new DB11 Volante loses four cylinders, but adds style in its topless conversion.

If the coming winter weather has you already dreaming of spring sunshine, Aston Martin wants to talk to you. They just unleashed their newest car, the DB11 Volante, and it features everyone’s favorite option of infinite headroom. The new convertible features all the style and visual artistry of the standard coupe, but losing the roof adds a nice touch of drama. We dare say it looks even better.

The roof is not the only thing Aston has cut from new DB11 Volante though. The wondrous V12 engine has been removed from the option sheet, leaving the new 4.0L V8 as the only available engine. A disconcerting change in a world that is continually moving away from high cylinder count engines. Still, the V8 is no slouch, and thanks to a pair of turbochargers, there are more than 500 horsepower at the command of your right foot.

As with most convertible conversions, the DB11 Volante did gain some extra heft. With a curb weight a touch over 4100 pounds, this new drop-top weighs about as much as the V12 coupe, or around 300 pounds more than the V8 two-door.

Still, the car is certainly a looker, and with a quoted 0-62 sprint of just 4.2 seconds, it’s not exactly slow. Aston is taking orders now, and the cars are set to be delivered in the spring, just in time for convertible season. Still, with a starting price of $216,495 this new convertible is about the same price as the V12 Coupe. We might not be the target market for this car, but we’d be hard pressed to swap those four cylinders for the extra headroom when staring at the same ticket price.
