Black Bowmore Aston Martin DB5 Whisky

Single malt scotch whisky inspired by the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 includes an actual piston from the car.

1964…it was a very good year. Aston Martin recently announced a new venture, and it is intoxicating. Bowmore Islay single malt scotch whisky and the automaker teamed to release Black Bowmore DB5 1964. It is a smooth combination: both the distillery and the DB5 are noted, historic, and delicious. In addition, the whiskey comes in a special bottle made with a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.

While Aston Martin may be associated with decidedly shaken-not-stirred cocktails, this collaboration is perfect for both brands. Lush, sophisticated, and tasty; and the scotch ain’t bad either.

As a limited special-edition, only 25 bottles will be offered for sale. And it is pricey, about $65,000 for a bottle. But what a special bottle it is. Each bottle of Black Bowmore DB5 1964 comes in a handcrafted retro-inspired presentation box. As a tribute to the DB5 it features custom solid brass latch and hinges, and is plated with nickel.

But the greatest touch is on the bottle itself, which includes an actual piston from a 1964 DB5.

1964 Aston Martin DB5

1964 was an important year for both Aston Martin and Bowmore. For the 240-year old Bowmore, this whisky was distilled November 5, 1964. For Aston Martin, 1964 was one year after the release of its epochal 4.0-liter DB5. A car so special that it has been called “the most famous car in the world.” Thanks in no small part to a certain Bond, James Bond.

“This exciting new association with Bowmore gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate a vital part of our star-studded history by combining the unrivaled appeal of the iconic DB5 with the cultured flavors of this world-renowned single malt,” says Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda.

Black Bowmore Aston Martin DB5 Whisky

As expected, Black Bowmore 1964 is a complex, dark drink. As for the taste, it has “intense flavors of mango, passion fruit and acacia honey interwoven with a powerful combination of coffee and tobacco smoke.” Vintage-inspired, to be sure, but the perfect bite.

We love the concept of an AM and whisky collaboration. It fits both brands nicely and organically. But including a 1064 DB5 piston is a stroke of brilliance. And, yeah, it may not be in our budget. However, we will look forward to their release with glass in hand.
