McLaren doubled production from 10 cars per day in 2011 to over 20 starting in 2016 due to the growing demand for the high-end supercars.

British supercar company McLaren Automotive has celebrated the 20,000th car to be hand-assembled at its McLaren Production Center in Woking, Surrey, England.

The 20,000th car built was a right-hand drive 600LT Spider in Chicane Grey from the brand’s Sports Series line-up. Launched only last summer as the next chapter in the McLaren ‘Longtail’ story, all production slots for the Coupe variant have already been filled.

“Achieving our 20,000th car built is an important milestone for McLaren Automotive,” said Mike Flewitt, McLaren Automotive’s Chief Executive Officer. “Last year we hand-assembled just over 4,800 cars and we plan to maintain around 5,000 cars a year for the immediate future. While demand for our products continues to grow, we aim to balance that to maintain exclusivity for our brand and our customers. It is fitting that we celebrate this achievement with a 600LT Spider which has been a huge success for us with all production slots for the coupe variant now sold out.”

McLaren’s Production Center doubled its production from 10 cars per day in 2011 to over 20 starting in 2016 due to the growing demand for the high-end supercars. McLaren now intends to take a third production leap and further increase its output to a mark of 6,000 vehicles per year before the end of its current Track25 plan.

“It’s [a] testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment from our McLaren Production Center employees that we’re now able to produce 20 cars a day across many different vehicle types and variants,” said Dr. Jens Ludmann, Chief Operating Officer for McLaren.

Announced at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2018, McLaren’s Track25 plan allocates 18 new vehicles or variants by year’s end in 2025. Roughly $1.5 billion has been set aside for research and development to accomplish this endeavor. The 600LT was the third vehicle to come out of this plan; following the McLaren Speedtail and 720S Spider. Along with the announcement of Track25 in 2018 McLaren opened McLaren Composites Technology Center for production of its next generation of lightweight carbon fiber “tubs,” a feature shared amongst all of its cars since the introduction of the MP4/1 into Formula 1.
