The GL continues to be offered in three models with three different engines, though each mill is either new or significantly upgraded.
The GL550 ditches its naturally-aspirated 5.5-liter V8 in favor of the twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 that is spreading like wildfire through Mercedes’ lineup. It produces 429 horsepower and a stout 516 lb-ft of torque, increases of 47 ponies and 125 lb-ft over the old mill.
The entry-level GL450 features a new, detuned version of the GL550′s motor that makes 362 horsepower and 406 horsepower.
Finally, the GL350 BlueTEC packs a revised 3.5-liter diesel V6 with advantages of 30 horsepower and 55 lb-ft over the previous engine, for totals of 240 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque.
All three engines pair with a seven-speed automatic transmission and send power to all four wheels through a standard 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Despite the increased power and capability, Mercedes promises “substantial” improvements in fuel economy, though the automaker has yet to release exact mileage figures.
