Thumbs up Porsche 911 Carrera achieves 42 mpg with PDK trans

German TV motor show host takes 911 Carrera with PDK transmission on a 648 km trek averaging only 6.7 liters per 100 km

You know things have changed when a pure performance car maker like Porsche is touting its mileage numbers. But that is, indeed, one of the major benefits of Porsche's new dual-clutch transmission, the PDK, which stands for Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. The other being an amazing performer on the track, of course.

But this feat was accomplished on the public roads reserved for the rest of us commoners. German TV motor show host Klaus Niedzwiedz took the a 911 Carrera fitted with the new PDK transmission for a little joy ride covering 648 kilometers that resulted in an average fuel consumption of only 6.7 l/100km (or 42 mpg imp. - 35 mpg U.S.). Not bad for a 3.6 liter, 345 hp vehicle.

So why not get in on the fuel-economy marketing game by promoting the sipping capacity of a 911? Even Porsche drivers would like to feel like their doing their part to fight global warming. And 6.7 liters/100km is the real deal.

Now that's an eye opener. Just putting that in perspective with all these little nasty eco-boxes, and all of a sudden their mpg is outrageous.

For the record, my lead foot averaged three times that this past summer

Now that makes purchasing a new 911 justifiable!

I'm not sure PDK has much to do with that ... but yes. Efficient engine, reasonably sized car and grandma driving ... good mpg.

PDK has lot to do with.... It always parks itself in 7th gear.... I think it is a little too eager to get to the 7th gear in my opinion..... I think I can get 30 mpg US in my Targa 4S if I try hard.... But with the gas prices coming down......... Grandma driving for sure.... ;-)
