I am a fan of THE McLaren F1, and look forward to their future of coming road cars (I like Ron Dennis completely focused on the road division now). I hope that Gordon Murray plays a pivotal role in the upcoming F1 successor (apparently there will be 3 models for McLaren's new car range).

I am a part of a F1 fantasy league as well. I debate a lot about it on asmallworld. Hehehe.

Oh, and I am a huge Ferrari fan, and am happy to see them coming back to form. Hakkinen was the last McLaren driver that I liked. Well, I disliked Alonso and now I like him again, but hope to see him at Ferrari. He is the best driver in the field. I don't really like Lewis. I will say that you are so lucky to have met him though. I have never been to a live race (can you believe it?). My dream is the meet Michael Schumacher though. He is really the only "celeb" that I am interested in meeting. I was so pissed when EVO had that MS competition, and I couldn't join because I am not a UK resident. Blah!

Slight corrections here for those interested;

1) The shields are not just raised (though they are 3 dimensional cloissone - painted glass to be clearer). The fenders for cars with shields are different than the fenders for cars without. The shield fenders are created with indentations where the shields are placed. Non-shield fenders are smooth.
2) So shields that sit entirely above the fender were added aftermarket - no big deal, but knowing maybe helpful to some of you.
3) The factory never provided decal shields - those are all aftermarket.
4) The Ferrari snobs look down on those of us with shields on our cars because those folks feel that only the Ferrari race cars should have them - Scuderia meaning "stable" in english, as you point out. Stable is to connote being a member of the Ferrari racing team, so if you're not on the team, how dare we (including me) have shields on our cars. Blah, blah.

It is just the raised fender badge with the prancing pony symbol on it. It is an option and comes in two types. The first is just a sticker applied under the clear coat. Those run about $200. The second is the raised porcelin variety - like on mine - that are welded to the aluminum space frame. Those run about $1,000 for the pair. I have heard rumors that you can spec the car with shield on one or both sides. But I have never seen a Ferrari with a shield on just one fender.

Ferrari owners are mixed on the shields. Some think they are too much. Others - like me - wouldn't buy one without them.

These are one of those options that must be done by the factory. They are not available after the sale. I have seen some VERY botched efforts at adding them aftermarket as well.

Fun Ferrari Fact: The "S F" on the shield stands for "Scuderia Ferrari." The Italian word "scuderia" means "stable" - as in a "stable of horses" - in English.
