New Maserati Sports Car Rumor

Sounds interesting - 2645 lbs, Ferrari V8 and dual clutch.

Maserati is planning a Porsche 911 and Audi R8-rivaling sports car for 2015, according to reports. The Italian automaker has set themselves a lofty goal of producing 50,000 cars a year in just under three years' time and a new 'pure' two-seater sports car, along with a Jeep-based SUV and diesel-powered sedan, could help Maserati reach that goal.

Maserati's CEO, Harald J. Wester, all but confirmed the rumor and that the new model will be called the GranSport.

It would sell for under €150,000 ($200K), weigh under 2,645lbs and measure 173-inches long.A mid-mounted Ferrari-sourced 4.7-liter V8 would provide the get-up-and-go, sending power to the rear wheels via a Ferrari-sourced dual-clutch gearbox. Coupled with a carbon fiber platform (funding not forbidding), the new GranSport would not only be quick and fast but incredibly competitive on the market. The new Maserati GranSport sounds impressive and hopefully this elaborate rumor turns out to be the real deal.

i would tell that ceo to put the pipe down

no maserati weighed less than 3,000 lbs. a scuderia weights more than that 2645 lb target. how would maserati be able to achieve that and keep it at $200k?

i am convinced that maserati is turning into lotus -- a lot of talk.

Actually a fantastic move - Ferrari wanted to release a lower priced vehicle to compete with the segment but know it'll lower the brand, so having Maserati enter that field will not harm the Ferrari badge and will seriously open up sales. People are bored of the R8 and 911, this will steal a hell of a lot of customers.

theres was a cool rendering of it on last months EVO magazine, if it looks good, I'm sure it will sell very well

Agreed. Sounds like a fantastic opportunity for them.

that would be really cool imo

I wonder with which money they should begin with when it comes to investing in huge R&D projects,..or are they well off by now?
any insight would be appreciated

I also think this could be huge. I think the final product will be grossly overweight no matter what they say but we will see.

Very cool idea. Now lets see if they produce it. My bet is no.

My bet is that they wind up using the F430 aluminum frame and not a carbon tub as stated in one of the articles. So basically, it will wind up being an F430 repackaged as a Maserati for a lower price. That would involve little R&D. Not a bad deal for Fiat or customers.
