E39 M5: The best sports sedan ever made?

What do you think? If you consider the impact it had on the market, and owners, it's easy to argue the E39 M5 still hasn't been matched.

To date, has any other high performance sedan made such a splash?

stuka 01-07-2010 08:39 PM

I still want one.

And yes. Wait, make that, hell yes.

MiniD 01-07-2010 08:55 PM

Yes

Simba 01-07-2010 08:57 PM

Probably, yes. Best daily ever.

Ara 01-07-2010 08:57 PM

As a new owner, yes.

pak 01-07-2010 09:43 PM

I'm on my second E39 M5 for a reason......simply put...it is a magnificent beast!

Oh heck yeah!

TeutonicCarFan 01-07-2010 11:15 PM

Best m5 and I can't think of any other 4dr I would love to drive.

AudiRS 01-08-2010 12:22 AM

I adore that car. Make that a yes for an 02-03 carbon black M5.

Craigger 01-08-2010 02:17 AM

followed a lemans blue one home in traffic today. Had my windows open in -5deg Celsius for 15 minutes just to hear it take off.

Yes.

YES!

I wish I could ask for my old one back!

Quit your fanboyism, you faggots - the E60 M5 6spd is better. So was the 6spd D2 S8, which wasn't plagued with Vanos diseases like the E39 M. In fact, none of them had any trouble at all during its 7 year cycle.

E60 M5 is about as ugly a car can get, thanks to the now departed Bangle.

And let's not even talk about how many BMW mechanics (dealer and independent) have warned me to never own one without some sort of warranty.

What do you think my answer is? Classiest f%$kin car I've ever owned (though I've only owned four cars). In all seriousness, I've been meaning to post the results of my recent e39 M5 service for those interested in picking one up. I'll get that done this weekend :D

InZane 01-08-2010 05:57 AM

Favourite BMW and fave sedan.

Le Mans Blue FTW! :D

brnsrgn 01-08-2010 06:01 AM

Joxy, we don't get 6sp here, otherwise I would have to agree with you... but until that happens.. the E39 was the only BMW I have ever driven that made sense to me!

brnsrgn 01-08-2010 06:34 AM

I haven't driven the E60, but the power curve is interesting compared to the e39. The E39 has about the same torque, but it comes lower down. The e60 is a faster car, but you have to rev it more to get the speed. In my opinion the lower oomph is more befitting to the luxury sport sedan feel.

Kayman 01-08-2010 07:57 AM

Hell yeah it is... what a car!

bmoores 01-08-2010 09:24 AM

I'm actually debating picking one up as my daily right now.

Alex 01-08-2010 09:30 AM

Jox is crazy. The E39 M is a classic and easily my favourite sports sedan.

Such a faggot thing to say.

bonehead 01-08-2010 10:11 AM

Benchmark setter for sure. Although the design is a bit outdated. A former work partner of mine had a gorgeous Jet Black one a few years back that I would always drool over in the parking garage. Took me for a spin and can honestly say it's the first car that scared the living $hit outta me. Low end grunt was insane.

I'd get one for a DD for sure if the potential maintenance costs weren't an issue.

TORCH FRC 01-08-2010 10:51 AM

The E39 M5 is something special for sure. I was really suprised at the acceleration from such a heavy car. It looks stunning too.

slavik 01-08-2010 10:59 AM

It truly is a great sedan. That 6spd gearbox is simply amazing.

brnsrgn 01-08-2010 01:29 PM

Tiff Needall has said it is one of the best balanced cares he has driven. Check out the fifth gear review with him driving it in the rain.

Listen you flamer, take your gayness elsewhere. The E39 M is not a car for sisses.

I remember that being one of the first car videos on the net that was a viral sensation. In fact I think that may have been when he was part of the Top Gear Crew.

I really can't think of another sports sedan that pushed the limits of capability, and executed the overall car as well as BMW did with the E39 M5. It will basically run with an RS4, has a very usable powerband, comfortable, feels like a vault - and is proper with it's 6 speed only gearbox and heavy clutch.

Although a little dated by todays standards, the NAV, stereo, and DSC programs are acceptable as well.

And, there is something to say about the styling of the car. It still looks the part, with its chunky wheels and tires, hungered stance, and subtle mirror and bodywork cues. But, it's thought out and sustainable, not overt like an Audi RS or Mercedes AMG.

Of course, it was built by a BMW Motorsport division that was more disciplined, and less diluted. A group that had strong ideas and guidelines for their vehicle development, and had yet to let their marketing department take over. Those who counted would understand. A saloon car for individuals that knew the true joys of driving, and demanded them.

e39 M5 looks great, and it's a blast to drive - will go down as one of the all time best BMW's. Just drooled all over DHinkle's black one in his garage last weekend. This isn't just fanboi talk either, it's really a great ride!

If it weren't for the fact that I'd be scared of the service and repair bills, I'd buy one in a heartbeat as my DD.

brnsrgn 01-08-2010 02:59 PM

Also a must see is the BMW film with Madonna, as the demanding musician in the guy ritchie directed film.

I still have the e39 M5 brochure I got when I went with my dad to order our cars (not an M5 unfortunately), but it is one of the cars that definitely did it for me then, and still does today. I will own one.

Yeah, that makes sense. Assuming that thing is as reliable as butter, you'd still be paying one third of that car's worth in insurance every year.
