E39 M5: The best sports sedan ever made? What do you think? If you consider the impact it had on the market, and owners, it's easy to argue the E39 M5 still hasn't been matched. To date, has any other high performance sedan made such a splash? |
I still want one. And yes. Wait, make that, hell yes. |
Yes |
Probably, yes. Best daily ever. |
As a new owner, yes. |
I'm on my second E39 M5 for a reason......simply put...it is a magnificent beast! pak |
Oh heck yeah! |
Best m5 and I can't think of any other 4dr I would love to drive. |
I adore that car. Make that a yes for an 02-03 carbon black M5. |
followed a lemans blue one home in traffic today. Had my windows open in -5deg Celsius for 15 minutes just to hear it take off. Yes. http://video.terabass.com/web_files/m5_dream.jpg |
YES! I wish I could ask for my old one back! |
Quit your fanboyism, you faggots - the E60 M5 6spd is better. So was the 6spd D2 S8, which wasn't plagued with Vanos diseases like the E39 M. In fact, none of them had any trouble at all during its 7 year cycle. |

And let's not even talk about how many BMW mechanics (dealer and independent) have warned me to never own one without some sort of warranty. |
1 Attachment(s) What do you think my answer is? Classiest f%$kin car I've ever owned (though I've only owned four cars). In all seriousness, I've been meaning to post the results of my recent e39 M5 service for those interested in picking one up. I'll get that done this weekend :D |
Favourite BMW and fave sedan. Le Mans Blue FTW! :D |
love mine. really is a tremendous car. |

I haven't driven the E60, but the power curve is interesting compared to the e39. The E39 has about the same torque, but it comes lower down. The e60 is a faster car, but you have to rev it more to get the speed. In my opinion the lower oomph is more befitting to the luxury sport sedan feel. |
Hell yeah it is... what a car! |
I'm actually debating picking one up as my daily right now. |
Jox is crazy. The E39 M is a classic and easily my favourite sports sedan. |

Benchmark setter for sure. Although the design is a bit outdated. A former work partner of mine had a gorgeous Jet Black one a few years back that I would always drool over in the parking garage. Took me for a spin and can honestly say it's the first car that scared the living $hit outta me. Low end grunt was insane. I'd get one for a DD for sure if the potential maintenance costs weren't an issue. |
The E39 M5 is something special for sure. I was really suprised at the acceleration from such a heavy car. It looks stunning too. |
It truly is a great sedan. That 6spd gearbox is simply amazing. |
Tiff Needall has said it is one of the best balanced cares he has driven. Check out the fifth gear review with him driving it in the rain. |

And, there is something to say about the styling of the car. It still looks the part, with its chunky wheels and tires, hungered stance, and subtle mirror and bodywork cues. But, it's thought out and sustainable, not overt like an Audi RS or Mercedes AMG. Of course, it was built by a BMW Motorsport division that was more disciplined, and less diluted. A group that had strong ideas and guidelines for their vehicle development, and had yet to let their marketing department take over. Those who counted would understand. A saloon car for individuals that knew the true joys of driving, and demanded them. |
A great example: Cars for Sale: 2003 BMW M5 Sedan in SEATTLE , WA 98121: Sedan Details - 271466691 - AutoTrader.com And, arguably the best car commercial of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plxNfU-PA2c |
e39 M5 looks great, and it's a blast to drive - will go down as one of the all time best BMW's. Just drooled all over DHinkle's black one in his garage last weekend. This isn't just fanboi talk either, it's really a great ride! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtDwEmwWd4M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agKyv...eature=related |
If it weren't for the fact that I'd be scared of the service and repair bills, I'd buy one in a heartbeat as my DD. |
Also a must see is the BMW film with Madonna, as the demanding musician in the guy ritchie directed film. |
1 Attachment(s) Agreed. |

I still have the e39 M5 brochure I got when I went with my dad to order our cars (not an M5 unfortunately), but it is one of the cars that definitely did it for me then, and still does today. I will own one. |
