Blue Painter's Tape?

Hi detailing guys! I'm taking my 2004 Chrysler Crossfire on a road trip from Minneapolis, MN to Seattle, WA in a few weeks and was wondering about the merits of painters tape for protecting my paint. I'm not the kind of guy that spends a lot of time washing, waxing, polishing, etc and my car does have a few rock chips already, but I'd like to avoid getting more chips if possible.

So, the question is: is painters tape a viable option to protect my car or should I just put up with the possibility of the few extra rock chips and bug guts gallore?

Side-note: If I do use painters tape, I'd likely cover my entire car so I can write messages like "Tits or GTFO" all over my car. To ricey? Or genius?

Forget the tape bro... use this

How's that help with rock chips, Hani? Or is it just for a film to protect from bugs?

BigE 07-21-2010 09:26 AM

Use the stuff Hani suggestd in conjunction with this stuff and you will be fine

GrayTT 07-21-2010 09:29 AM

When the stuff hardens it will protect the car from bugs and small stones… just like painter tape. Only it is easier to put on, take off, and does not start to fly of at speed, oh wait Alex is in a Crossfire so the speed thing is not important

Oh and Clever, sorry about dropping the ball with regards to Bahrain... things got ugly and work was really demanding

That will strip the wax off.

Ouch buddy! Unfortunately, I don't have to be going too fast to get a ticket from Johnny Law-man around these parts. :(

On second thought, I just found out my dad has a 200 ft roll of 3M clear-bra material lying around at the office. Looks like I'll be giving that a try.

Brobbins016 07-21-2010 10:55 AM

Forget the 3M, use the painters tape, write all over the damn thing. Genius does not even begin to approach that. Have some fun, be weird, go nuts. Why not?

12/2002 driving back from Kuwait to bahrain in an LC, front fully covered in soap, just as we got to Bu Hadria it started raining and the soap foamed up all the way to the wind shield, what was a 4 hour drive turned into an 11 hour headache.

Yeah, driving across the midwest, rain at some point in nearly certain.

DEEPBLUE 07-21-2010 11:27 AM

I am lmao just picturing this, and Ive seen my share of goofy things in the Middle East :-)

Good time to stop, grab the wash mitts and wash the car, and re-apply when it stops raining.

No worries mate, maybe we can still figure out a trip for the future when things aren't so hectic! Pretty hectic on my side too ATM!

But it's hard to write "tits or bust" in soap.

And I'd rather take pics of bare breasts than a soapy car. Just sayin'.

I like the way you think, Hani.

They are dirty... they need to be washed... by me... Hani, Alex - you guys can help... and film!!! :D

Alzilla 07-21-2010 06:16 PM

OK, so I've got some clear vinyl material I can use as a clear bra for the front of my car. The other option I just came up with would be to wrap the car in blue painter's tape, then make an orange stripe down the middle and go for the Gulf-liveried look I've always thought was awesome.

Thoughts? Should I keep it stealthy and stock looking or go for something wild and disposable that I've always wanted to try?

Alzilla 07-21-2010 09:49 PM

Quick rendering I whipped up of what I had in mind if I go down the painter's tape route:

Go for the Gulf theme - it will be a good amount of work, but I will laugh at the pictures!!

yzracer931 07-22-2010 12:46 AM

Gulf theme all the way.

Neijia 07-22-2010 12:58 AM

I love your idea Alex, since you've always wanted to do it, but I have to say, trying to take tape off of a car that's been on for a while in baking heat, will be an all day project with some solvent; to say the least.

GuessWho 07-22-2010 01:34 AM

Gulf theme. Let me know when you get it would be cool to try and meet some TS'ers. Im only an hr south of Seattle

NVPhotoman 07-22-2010 01:43 AM

How does the law look at this?
Because according to your registration your car is white, black or whatever but you wrap’d it in blue, yellow, etc

My car is wrapped in matte black and carbon, but technically it's still white so the police can't penalize me for it... yet. I'm sure they'll make a law soon though :(.

Alzilla 07-22-2010 07:37 AM

Alright. Gulf theme it is. I'm going to debut it at Cars & Cafe the day before I leave!

B4rad 08-04-2010 04:19 AM

Lol, I cannot believe you would want to cover up your car in painters tape! And any bets as soon as you park it somewhere, some gay-arse will draw a huge penis on it. Not want you want to be seen in. Well at least I wouldn't want to be seen in.

You bring up a good point. I decided last week that I'm going to clear-bra the front of the car instead. Although it'd be fun to tape up the car, I don't want to draw any extra attention from the state patrol cars.
