Winning - The Racing Life of Paul Newman (4)

A great man packs a lot of experiences into one lifetime. A legendary man stuffs multiple lifetimes into one human incarnation. You already know Paul Newman is outstanding for his Academy-award-winning acting career, and for his philanthropic work with Newman’s Own. Those accomplishments alone make him an eternal legend of a galactic magnitude. If you’re a regular TeamSpeed reader, it’s likely you know Newman was a racer, but you probably were unaware how masterful he was on the racetrack. Adam Carolla’s new film Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman is here to change that.

To the general public, Newman’s accomplishments in cinema and mega-celebrity status overshadowed his achievements on the track. Winning sweeps away the shadows by spotlighting Newman’s formidable racing career — a career so magnificent, a documentary could be built around it.

Carolla and his co-director, Nate Adams along with executive producers Norm Pattiz and Matt D’Andria slingshotted this film past the checkered flags for a first-place finish. Winning goes beyond just a word in the film’s title. This movie is a win for everyone involved in its production.

For a car guy like me who isn’t particularly a racing fan, Winning still spoke to me on a human-interest level, and that’s important if this documentary is to succeed with non-car people. When I read books about the history of certain car models, I usually start skipping pages once I reach the racing history portions of the respective chapters. If those chapter sections were written more like this documentary, not only would I read car history books in their entirety, but also I think I’d actually become a racing fan. The idea that I could even become a racing fan is as foreign to me as a desert tortoise in Antarctica.

Because of this movie, I am now most definitely a fan of Paul Newman’s racing career.

If you enjoy the preview below, you can buy the movie now or watch it on demand beginning May 22. Learn more about how to see it at www.newmanracingfilm.com.

I attended the Winning press screening at Adam Carolla’s warehouse, which is a sight to behold. The place is essentially a mini car museum as you’ll see in the gallery below.
