Powered by BMW M’s TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder engine, the front mid-engine and rear-wheel-drive car will be revealed in 2020.

German luxury hand built sports cars automaker Wiesmann, has announced their triumphant return of the marque with a brand new car for 2020. The car, code-named “Project Gecko,” is shrouded in mystery. Literally, shrouded.

What we do know is that the car will be engineered and built at the original Wiesmann factory in Dülmen, Germany.

Many of the elements that gave the Wiesmann MF5 a cult following–such as the distinctive design and luxury features–will remain. Key changes include an all-new platform utilizing the very latest lightweight technologies to increase performance.

The look of Project Gecko will be familiar to Wiesmann fans as the brand’s iconic design DNA runs through the new car; the project team refers to this being a design evolution rather than revolution.

The new model will be front mid-engined with rear-wheel drive, delivering perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Power comes from BMW M’s TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder engine, continuing the historic partnership between Wiesmann and BMW.

The launch is headed by owner and chief executive Roheen Berry, who is working with his brother Sahir on the project; just as brothers Martin and Friedhelm Wiesmann teamed up on the original launch in 1988. It brings to fruition three years of work by the team of engineers and designers.

“This last true independent manufacturer of German sports cars is back and has an exciting future to look forward to.” Roheen Berry said. “When we set out on this journey we said we wanted to re-engineer an icon and we are on track to do exactly that.”

The Wiesmann team have worked hard to improve the drive and modernize key features, using cutting-edge technologies to bring the car up to the latest standards so it conforms to regulations in key markets. More technical details on the new car will be revealed over the coming months.

As with previous Wiesmann models, the new car will be hand built at the original Dülmen factory with several members of the original team working on Project Gecko. Wiesmann will be targeting buyers who want a unique, premium sports car with real stand-out qualities.
