Crumpled-up Jaguar XK150 S proves how crazy the collector car market is by nabbing six times its auction estimate.

The automotive world is in a strange place at the moment. Supply chain constraints have caused major production headaches for manufacturers, leading to depleted inventory on dealer lots. That has driven consumers to used cars, which have likewise skyrocketed in value thanks to the good old supply and demand curve. But the collector car market is also on fire as folks have a bit more money to spend after mostly not traveling for a year plus, and that culminated with someone dropping a significant $127,552 on this 1960 Jaguar XK150 S at a recent Bonhams auction.

If this Jaguar XK150 S wasn’t crumpled up like a tin can, we could make a case for that hammer price. After all, this is one of the hottest models on the collector car market, a truly desirable machine that’s virtually guaranteed to represent an appreciating asset in the coming years. However, this particular example was crashed head-on into a tree after the previous owner lost control on a wet road and has been stored in a garage ever since.

Bonhams notes that the car is salvageable, which is really true of just about any car if you put enough time and money into it. But is this particular Jaguar XK150 truly worth sinking that kind of money into, after the buyer paid six times the car’s auction estimate to bring it home? We’re betting no, but perhaps the new owner doesn’t care, and just wanted this particular Jag so badly that they were willing to overspend.

On the flip side, this derelict machine has several redeeming qualities. After changing hands a couple of times early in its life, the Jag has lived with one owner since 1969. Only around 50 of these special S drop-tops were produced, so it’s certainly rare. In perfect, restored condition, it would likely be worth over a quarter-million, so perhaps there is some wiggle room there. Especially when we consider the fact that it will have a pretty cool story to tell if/when it is restored.

Regardless, it takes a lot of guts to pay six times a vehicle’s auction estimate to bring it home, especially when it’s really nothing more than a mangled up, extravagant paperweight at this point.
