Rolex 24 Competitor Shares Oil Analysis Results

After competitive showing in Daytona, Pfaff Motorsports tested the oil it ran in Motul-sponsored Porsche 911, and the results are impressive.

Nothing lights an automotive forum on fire quite like a “What oil should I use?” thread. Everyone has an opinion. Some people have data.

Back in January, Pfaff Motorsports campaigned their Porsche 911 GT3 R at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The car, with its lumberjack plaid-print livery, was easy to pick out in the pack. A distinctive paint scheme is a sure-fire way to draw attention to sponsors.

However, the results of the testing Pfaff Motorsports performed after the race may draw even more attention. The No. 9 car was sponsored by Motul. Consequently, Pfaff Motorsports ran Motul oil in the car. After the checkered flag waved, they sent that oil out for testing, to see just how well it held up over the course of a grueling 24-hour race.

Impressive Results

As it turns out, the oil far exceeded expectations. In fact, it performed so well, that the lab stated that they’d need additional samples that ran even longer to determine normal wear patterns for this oil. That’s impressive. Motorsport doesn’t get much longer or more grueling than a 24-hour endurance race.

According to our Porsche-focused sister site Rennlist, the oil used in the car was Motul 300V Trophy synthetic racing oil. You won’t find many streetcars running this formulation, or this viscosity — 0W40. This 0W40 oil is designed to perform in sustained high-temperature environments.

Oil breaks down with age and use, and heat exacerbates those effects. The synthetic polymers in Motul 300V Trophy are specially designed to resist heat, resulting in a longer-wearing oil. In short, it”s designed to drain out of the race car looking and behaving in more or less the same way in which it was poured in.

More data is always a good thing, especially when it comes to engine oil — our car’s lifeblood. And while we don’t intend for this to sound like an advertisement, the hard data clearly shows that Motul is a good product that performs well. Congrats to them and Pfaff — and, of course, to the No. 9 Porsche 911 GT3 R.
