Porsche Boxster to Lykan Hypersport Conversion Gets New Exhaust

By -

Porsche has the longer chassis and Lykan body, allowing the team to focus on some fine details.

When we last checked in on Casey Putsch and his project of transforming a 2007 Porsche Boxster S into a Lykan Hypersport, the team was loosely installing the body. To make the body fit, the chassis had to be lengthened and that was clearly one of the biggest aspects of this project. Once the chassis was stretched, all of the various lines, hoses, cables and electrical connections that run from end-to-end in the Boxster are now too short in the larger car.

In the newest video from Putsch’s YouTube channel, we pick up the project with Putsch and two Genius Garage students, Tyler and Cameron, as they address those reach issues. We also get a look at the newly installed suspension setup before the team tears into the focus of this video, which is installing the new exhaust system from Soul Performance.

Longer Chassis Problems

In case you missed the first few chapters of this project, Putsch and his team are converting a 2007 Porsche Boxster into a Lykan Hypersport. The Hypersport is one of the rarest and most expensive supercars in the world, having been based on a RUF-modified Porsche 911. Fortunately, W Motors made a replica for the Fast and Furious Live show, but that “car” didn’t run, drive or offer any sort of supercar performance. The folks from the VINWiki YouTube channel bought the replica prop car from the live show and brought it to the United States, where it was shipped to Putsch and his Genius Garage students.

The team began by stripping down the body and lengthening the chassis by about eight inches, allowing the Porsche chassis to match the length of the Hypersport. The problem created by stretching the chassis is that most of the lines, cables, hoses and electrical connections are now too short. At the beginning of this video, Tyler is working on relocating the battery into the frunk, which is where it is located in the Lykan. That same student is working on the emergency brake and shift cables, fabricating extensions so that all of the stock Porsche systems work as normal in the Lykan.

Next, Putsch talks with Cameron, who is working on extensions for the fuel lines, but he also crafted longer pieces for the brake and clutch lines and after finishing these bits, he plans to move onto the coolant lines. Once Putsch and these two students are done with this portion of the project, they will be close to firing up their modified Boxster-turned-Lykan.

Into the Wheel Wells

In the next short segment of the video above, Putsch takes a look at the area around the wheels of the Boxster. He shows us the freshly-installed coilover suspension setup with adjustable ride height, camber and stiffness, which will allow the team to fine tune the handling. He also shows us the slick neoprene covers that Coilover Depot sent out to protect the moving parts of this trick system.

Putsch also points out that when installing the suspension bits, they took a close look at the wheel bearings, the brake rotors and the brake calipers, all of which looked good. He also explains that with the wider track of the Lykan, this Porsche will get a thicker rear sway bar to help ensure proper supercar capabilities.

New Exhaust for the Porsche

The key focus of this sixth video in the series is adding Soul Performance Exhaust to the Porsche Lykan project. Putsch begins by unboxing the parts, uncovering shirts that he gives to the students to wear during the video before pulling out one of the gorgeous headers. As he looks over the header with an integrated catalytic convertor, he points out the craftsmanship and fine details of the design.

The exhaust install begins with Tyler working on the driver’s side header while Putsch lays out the rest of the exhaust system on the floor next to the car. Cameron removes the stock exhaust bracket and installs the compact Soul bracket, which looks a whole lot tidier. Tyler eventually moves to the passenger’s side header while Cameron and Putsch tackle the rest of the system, adding the mid-pipes and the tailpipes with their heavy-duty clamps. As the three install each component, they continue to swoon about the quality of the system, going so far as to call it one of the nicest aftermarket systems that they’ve ever seen.

We don’t get to hear the Soul Performance Exhaust in action, but Putsch plans to have this unique Porsche running within a week of this video filming. Once it does, we imagine that it is going to sound incredible with this race-style exhaust system.

Porsche Lykan Exhaust in Place

While there is still a whole lot of work left to do, this project of transforming a Porsche Boxster S into a Lykan Hypersport is taking shape and the team is making impressive progress in a hurry. We cant wait to see the finished product.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
