BBI Autosport 991 Street GT3 R

Reporting straight from SEMA: This brutal looking 991 Street GT3 R got its public debut at the Optima Batteries booth.

BBi Autosport is a Porsche tuning company that started out of a small garage in 2005 as a side project and has grown into a full-time race and performance house building some of the fastest Porsches around. This 991 Street build of Porsche’s GT3 race car is being built for a regular customer based from a 2015 991 GT3.
We spoke to the owner, Joe (also known as 997turbocab), who explained exactly what they mean about it being a Street GT3 R. He could go out and buy a factory built GT3 R and “only get to drive it at the track, and store it at the track, and can’t see it every day.” Instead, he wants a version of the GT3 race car he can drive on the street whenever he feels like it. His vision for the Street GT3 R is, “All the geometry of a race car but make it drivable on the street and still keep it light, and with a full interior.”
The build you see in our pictures is at around the halfway stage. It took 6-months alone to plan and get the parts together, with a lot of the OEM equipment coming from Germany. BBi tells us that a lot of painstaking detail work has gone into the build to make sure it’s a true race car for the road. That detail goes all the way down to ensuring that the sensors, modules, and even the transponder for the garage opener still work. As Joe puts it, “Everything is a challenge and it’s an open checkbook build.”
Currently, the 991 Street GT3 R has a stock engine installed but BBi has a 991.2 engine lined up to replace it and, with the help of two turbochargers, is planned to make 1200 horsepower to the wheels. However, in order to fit a turbocharged engine into an area designed for a naturally aspirated motor, there will be some careful engineering making use of 3D scanners to pull it off.
The interior of the 991 Street GT3 R will be kitted out with Alcantara and houndstooth, but the exterior color scheme is yet to be decided. A wrap is on the cards so the color can be changed regularly as Joe doesn’t plan to sell his cars and drives them all regularly.
Joe has built 6 cars so far with BBI and truly believes in them. This is a shared vision with the company and, for Joe, BBi is the company to do it right. This is already a special car but we can’t wait to see it finished and out and about at shows, in the canyons, and maybe even on the track.
