A technical partnership between Aston Martin and Formula 1 team Red Bull Racing has resulted in the creation of an incredible hypercar, codenamed AM-RB 001.

Here’s what you need to know about this soon-to-be track record-breaker:

  • Powered by a high-revving, naturally-aspirated V12 engine
  • 1:1 power-to-weight ratio (1 bhp per kilo)
  • Mid-engined two-seater
  • Produced in limited quantities with road and track-only versions

AM-RB 001 is the brainchild of Adrian Newey (Red Bull Racing’s Chief Technical Officer), Marek Reichman (Aston Martin EVP and Chief Creative Officer) and David King (Aston Martin VP and Chief Special Operations Officer), and together they are producing what is essentially a consumer version of an LMP1 Le Mans prototype race car.

As both a completely usable passenger car and track monster, AM-RB 001 is a unique blend of form and function featuring a lightweight carbon fiber structure and radical aerodynamics.

If you look closely, you can see the lack of a traditional flat-underbody. Newey’s design produces most of its downforce by channeling air underneath the car, allowing more freedom for Reichman to craft a flowing body that isn’t disrupted by fins, canards or large spoilers.

Few specifics about AM-RB 001’s performance have been revealed, but we do know that total production volume will be between 99 ad 150 road cars (including any remaining prototypes) and 25 track-only versions. We should expect to see the first examples of this extreme hypercar hitting the roads — and hopefully tracks — around 2018.
