Taking a McLaren 720S Onto the Canyon Roads of California

Matt Farah drops an in-depth video review of the McLaren 720s and we soak up the sights and sounds of the British supercar.

McLaren is not known for being a company that rests on its laurels. This is not a company that will be happy to fall into a single category for making the best handling supercar, prettiest, best daily driver or the fastest supercar in a straight line. McLaren purely aims to make the best overall supercar you can buy.

When we were recently killing some time online looking at fantasy cars, we ran across this cool clip of Matt Farah when he passed the torch for the Smoking Tire‘s One Take video series to Zack Klapman. Farrah said he would only come back to make episodes for special cars. The McLaren 720S is definitely a special car and embodies everything a supercar should be. McLaren’s obsession with engineering detail for performance is legendary, and perhaps best highlighted by a single logo printed inside the earlier 12C supercar. Originally, McLaren had the tooling made for that particular logo to be raised from the metal before somebody realized they could save a few grams by having it engraved instead. They retooled to save that few grams of weight.

Now, 7 years later, the 720S is the lightest of the McLaren’s core Super Series line of cars at just 3,128 lb. But, unlike the 12C, they haven’t dropped luxury features to get there. There is a full infotainment system and heated seats contained in a number that, combined with the 710 horsepower and 568 lb.ft of torque, gives a 0-60 mph time of 2.7 seconds and a 0–124 mph time of 7.8 seconds. The reported quarter-mile time is under 10 seconds as well as a top speed of 212 mph. All of that inside a car you can happily drive around the city all day is simply staggering. Whether it looks pretty or not is subjective but, either way, it’s no surprise the Farrah came out of retirement from making One Take videos to get one out for a drive in the canyons.

Ian's obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars. His first job was as a mechanic, then he trained as a driving instructor before going into media production.

The automotive itch never left though, and he realized writing about cars is his true calling. However, that doesn’t stop Wright from also hosting the Both Hand Drive podcast.
