Man Buys McLaren 720S, Wrecks It the Next Day

Here’s a great example of what not to do after you buy an incredibly capable vehicle like the McLaren 720S.

Modern hypercars are great. Every single year, these speed demons just get faster and more capable, continuing to push the envelope even further than we could have ever imagined. But this incredible speed is available to even those without racing pedigrees, too. Modern supercars have plenty of electronic nannies and amazing suspension/tire technology designed to keep you on the road. And yet, one brand new McLaren 720S owner still managed to run his shiny new ride right into a tree. The day after he bought it.

Unsurprisingly, the Great Falls, Virginia resident was speeding when he lost control of the car, according to the Fairfax County Police Department, who posted a picture of the aftermath on Instagram. Thankfully, the McLaren’s safety equipment did its job, as the driver suffered only minor injuries. Unfortunately, the car didn’t fare as well and is a complete loss.

Purchased Friday. Totaled Saturday. This McLaren 720S, costing around $300,000, was destroyed today in Great Falls because of speed. The driver was taken to the hospital with thankfully only non-life threatening injuries. A reminder to slow down, or it could cost you. . . . . . . . . . . . #mclaren #mclaren720s #crash #fcpd #greatfalls #dontspeed #slowdown #drivesafe

Crashes like this give us mixed feelings, of course. We totally understand how tempting (and easy) it is to explore the incredible capabilities of a car like the McLaren 720S. But of course, doing so on public roads isn’t ever a great idea. There are just too many things that can go wrong, and typically no medical team/fire and rescue on site.

On the other hand, it’s also pretty amazing to see how well the car held up. Even though the entire driver’s side appears to be caved in, the structure remains intact. Thankfully, supercar manufacturers are smart enough to spend as much time engineering their cars to be safe as they do making them fast. But perhaps this guy should have spent his first bit of wheel time learning the car. Or, better yet, taking a course at his local track!
