London Councours Picks Designer Ian Callum as 2020 ‘Collector’

Designer’s significant contribution to auto design is being showcased via display of his own collection, June 10 & 11.

There’s really no denying Ian Callum‘s influence on car design. He has designed some of the most iconic cars of the modern era. He is credited for the Ford RS200, the Aston Martin DB7, DB9 and Vanquish, Jaguar’s C-x75 concept and the F-type. Plus as head designer for Jaguar for a number of years, his resume speaks for itself. And now, the 2020 London Concours will feature Ian Callum CBE as “The Collector.”

Callum will have a number of cars on display, and all of them reflect what he feels are great examples of design. Callum, of course, picked a Jaguar from his collection to display, but not one of his designs. His Jaguar XJC represents his love for slim pillar design. His Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Veloce holds the same ethos. Interestingly, he cites his Triumph TR6 as, “one of the best-looking traditional sports cars, boasting inherent visual strength.” From his own design, he will display an Aston Martin Vanquish, and a Ford Puma.

Callum likes variety as well, so his collection also includes a 993 generation Porsche 911. That car represents something interesting in terms of automotive design, with having to modernize a design that was revered for several decades. And a polar opposite from the 993 comes in the form of a 1932 Ford Model B hot rod. That hot rod might seem out of place, but represents a very unique style on its own. Interestingly, all of the vehicles have been modified in some way by Callum. With an eye for design and style, can you blame him? London Concours Director, Andrew Evans says, “We’re very much looking forward to welcoming Ian’s cars onto the hallowed lawns of London’s Honourable Artillery Company.”

The display will be part of the London Concours, which runs from June 10 and 11. Aside from Callum’s collection, the London Concours will also feature a host of other feature displays. Two displays we would be most interested in would be “The Pursuit of Speed” and “The Era of the Hypercar.” Although other displays such as “Lost Marquis” and “The Speed of Sand” showcase low volume manufacturers and land speed record cars. Other features include Aston Martin, Bugatti, convertibles of the golden era, and Lancia legends.
