Heavy Metal: Gold Ferrari Sells at Auction for Half a Million Dollars
With high performance and exceptional luxury, this rare Ferrari went for the gold on the auction block. Â
Poet Robert Frost once wrote that “nothing gold can stay.” This was certainly the case at the “Midas Touch” auction held recently at RM Sotheby’s. Among the menagerie of glittering gold items up for auction was one especially decadent and opulent 1977 Ferrari 412 BB. The Ferrari was painted in gold, and fetched a little over $500,000.
The 1977 Ferrari was one of a kind, painted in Oro Chiaro Metallizzato, or light gold metallic, with Testa di Moro brown interior. Introduced in 1976 the 512 BB offered a wider rear track, wider tires, updated chin spoiler, and redesigned twin tail lights.
There was a decidedly more fierce engine in the 4.9-liter. It produced 360 bhp, had increased torque, and easily took tops speeds of 174 mph. This is a true supercar that was clearly worth its weight in gold, so to speak.
Other items on the “Midas Touch” block include a gold bust of model Kate Moss by artist Marc Quinn, and a bottle of Dom Perignon Gold Mathusalem 2002. Because, why not?
We have to admit, it would be pretty cool driving around in a gold Ferrari with a bottle of Dom, and Kate Moss in the passenger seat. Hey, if you’re going to go gilded, you might as well go all the way.
Stay gold!
