First Bespoke Ferrari Sergio Seeks Yet Another New Owner

Ferrari keeps switching hands with wild swings in estimated asking price.

Only six Ferrari Sergio models were ever made, and the 458-based model seems like an investment-worthy car. However, the very first one made has switched owners a number of times. This curiosity of multiple owners is further compounded by the fact that this car – to commemorate Pininfarina’s 85th anniversary – was the very car Ferrari used to showcase the new limited run at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015.

Ultra-low volume cars have had a tendency of appreciating in value quite rapidly, just due to the number of collectors and limited supply. But a price swing of almost 2 million dollars leaves the market for a Sergio quite volatile.

One year prior to this current sale, Sergio No.1 was for sale for $5,000,000, but RM Sotheby’s, the current consigned auction sellers, estimates their sale will get $1.3M less. That’s a big drop in value in a year for quite a significant model, named after Sergio Pininfarina himself. That is, if it actually sold for $5,000,000.

Investments take time to mature, so the hot-potato scenario we see here makes little sense to us. Perhaps this next owner will allow time to build value and this Sergio becomes an investment that one can only look at. With less than 200 miles, it seems almost wrong to accumulate more clicks on the odometer. That’s a shame, because cars like this deserve to be driven.

Pininfarina has penned some of the most significant models in Ferrari’s history, including the 308, Testarossa, and the basis of the Sergio, the 458. Pininfarina’s work on this car is largely just with styling, but there are some mechanical touches, too. Propulsion comes from the 458 Speciale, which produced 608 hp, so speed will not be of concern, only length of ownership.
