Is there anything more intoxicating than a mid-mounted V12 and a gated manual shifter? This car could be terrible to drive in every other aspect, and in fact it is, but due to those two simple factors, this is one of the most highly sought after Italian collectibles today. The 25th Anniversary Countach models produced in 1989 were available only in limited quantities, as just 658 were sold. It’s Horacio Pagani’s evolution of an already-gorgeous Gandini design. It’s surprisingly beautiful with that gaudy rear wing removed. And this particular example has been lovingly cared for by its owners, and was recently given the Canepa treatment.

I’m normally not a fan of the Countach, preferring to live in an imaginary world where Lamborghini ceased to exist after production of the Espada ended. I appreciate the very early iterations of the Countach, before all of the tacked-on aero and impact bumpers. That said, this anniversario edition has a lot going for it. The rear wing is a step too far on this design, so removing it makes the whole package look far better. It’s a step toward simplifying, which is welcome in my eyes. Of course, the strakes, scoops, and flares are a product of the time period in which it was built. The late 1980s were a time of excessive design and tack-ons, and in that context this one fit in perfectly.

Canepa lists this Countach as impeccable in both mechanical and cosmetic regard. The rear wing does come with the sale, if you prefer to have it installed (though I would certainly fault you for it). If you’re looking for a rare Lambo, this might be the one you want to check out.
