1967 Porsche 911 S

Porsche 911 S has been extensively modified in the spirit of the 1967 911 R, a limited-edition lightweight racer.

In 1966 Porsche built a lightweight test car called the 911 R that combined the lightest parts body available with a race-spec, 2.0-liter flat-6 engine. In 1967 the factory decided to produce 19 of these special cars, keeping four for themselves and selling the remainder to customers. Needless to say the 911 R went on to great racing success thanks to its sub-1800 pound weight and 210 horsepower engine. Today, 911 Rs are extremely expensive, that is when they even come up for sale. However, the model has gone to inspire many tributes based on the much more common production 911. Over on the Rennlist Porsche forum, member MRM930 is selling a beautiful 1967 Porsche 911 S that has been modified in the spirit of the original 911R

Originally built as a full-on vintage racecar, the seller purchased this classic beauty about 2.5-years ago to use as a street car. And what a street car it must be! Prior to the seller’s ownership the 911 saw 25 years of racetrack use, which it survived in amazingly nice shape. Pretty much every aspect of the Porsche has been modified for racing, from the built flat-6 engine and upgraded suspension to the still-intact fire suppression system.

The 911 left the factory in Stuttgart, Germany painted Bahama Yellow, a bright shade that suits the car’s street racer vibe perfectly. The seller treated the body to a glass-out repaint in the original Bahama Yellow. During reassembly 911 R-style taillights and lenses were installed. You can differentiate these from stock 911 taillights due to the round lenses they utilize. There are also 911 R-style engine lid hinges as well as stainless steel rear window hold-down straps. During the repaint the racing decals were removed. In their place are black R-style racing stripes and black “Porsche” script down the side of the body. Even the door handles were removed and drilled for lightness before being rechromed and put back on the car. A pair of authentic Cibie driving lights from France were installed, while the wheels are period-correct 15×6-inch polished Fuchs alloys wrapped with Pirelli tires.

To ensure that the Porsche was suitable for street use, the seller removed the front half of the welded-in roll cage, leaving the rear portion to server as a roll bar. There is also a lightweight carpet kit to add a dose of refinement on those long weekend drives. GTS Classic buckets seats and Repa race harnesses work in combination with a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel and wooden shift knob. Light and simple 911 RS-style door panels were installed with leather pull straps. The rest of the interior was repainted and trimmed-out with an equal attention to detail.

The seller’s description is a little light when it comes to the mechanical specification of the driveline. He says it does have a 2.7-liter “race” motor paired with a close-ratio transmission. The 911R originally came with a relatively small 2.0-liter, so the larger modified 2.7-liter in this car no doubt provides plenty of performance. And given its long history as a vintage racecar, no doubt the suspension and brakes have been upgraded to race-spec as well. This 1967 911S is available for $155,000. That price no doubt is far less than what has been poured into this machine over the years of racing and then being converted to a bad-ass Porsche Outlaw.
