Porsche 550 Spyder fetches $3.685 Million at Amelia Island
At the famous Gooding and Company auction in Amelia Island, Florida, the gavel went down on a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder for nearly $3.7 million including the buyer’s premium. Reports note the winning bid exceeded the pre-sale estimate by a cool million, an astonishing result as the prices continue to climb on the coveted 550's.
Produced in extremely limited numbers between 1953 and 1957, Porsche’s first purpose-built racing car was instrumental in establishing an enviable sporting reputation for the up-and-coming German marque. Throughout the 1950s, the petite four-cam Spyders dominated the small-displacement classes in both Europe and the US, earning a loyal band of followers as well as Porsche victories at leading international venues. Contributing to the legend of the Porsche 550, as most enthusiasts will know, the famous actor James Dean was driving Spyder 550-0055 when he met his demise on his way to a race in September 1955.
The 550's four cam flat four made more than sufficient power to move the 1,200-pound aluminum-bodied car at harrowing speeds. James Dean was famously killed in his 550 on the way to a race in Salinas, Calif. The spyder is one of the most popular cars of the 1950s and perhaps one of the greatest little racers of all time.
