New to shooting-- looking to purchase

Im looking to buy a pistol and a rifle -- something I can shoot at the range for fun.

I don't want to have to upgrade these items later- so I'd rather buy top quality now.

What do u guys suggest?

I've heard a lot about AR this or that - bit to be honest Im not sure what that means.

Thx

Go to the range and rent a few different pistols. Shoot them and pick whatever feels comfortable.

TheYoungConnoisseur 10-12-2012 09:46 PM

Kimber CDPII for the pistol and If your looking for a bolt action rifle a howa m1500 in whatever caliber you prefer. Probally the best bang for the buck rifle on the market.

Whoa, if you're that new and don't exactly understand what an AR means then slow down. I do not advise following random recommendations when you have no clue what they mean. Not trying to insult by any means, I'm just saying you need to know what you want specifically. I would go talk to your local gun shop and explain your situation and goals. They will be way more help than anyone on here.

quickZohsix 10-13-2012 09:03 AM

I second the advice above.

-eztrader- 10-15-2012 11:26 AM

i appreciate the advice, buy can you guys throw a few ideas out there, so i can ask my local gun shop what to look at?

thx

EZ,
The boys are giving you the best advice. It's like going to the mustang ranch. You have a ton of choices. Start by window shopping at your local gun stores and ask questions. In the meantime what exactly do you want them for? Most guys buy a rifle to go hunting. If so then I can give you more specific advice.

PatrickHenry 10-15-2012 12:24 PM

how far do you want to shoot?

a 380 has fairly expensive ammo and is little.

a 9mm is what it is. nothing wrong with that.

a 45 is not meant to be carried around in your pocket.

every collection needs a basic AR, so just buy one and you'll change your mind/style and have fun doing it down the road...

go buy a $1000 pistol, a $1000 revolver and a $1500 bolt action gun and wait on the scope. simple. done.

Marc 10-15-2012 01:48 PM

.45 caliber for sure, dont be talked into 9 or 40. Glock or HK get a sizeable gun as a range gun not a compact.

maxemus 10-15-2012 02:54 PM

What's wrong with those calibers Marc?

Just from my 25 years of guns and trading, 9mm is weak high speed but weak stop power, 40mm is a good compromise round and not a bad choice but I prefer .45 so my choices are:

For me HK45c (45) or HK P30 (40) , if not go Glock 23 (40) or Glock 30 (45) they are the most reliable brands and are the opposite ends of spectrum HK is pricey and Glock is reasonable.

And if anyone uses the term '' stopping power '' ignore them. Shot placement is key.

PatrickHenry 10-16-2012 07:30 PM

a 45 will take an arm off as opposed to sting a person. placement is for the pros, not the average joe. responsibility is key.

81911 10-16-2012 09:35 PM

Sting a person?
Jesus. I'm done here.

maxemus 10-17-2012 12:08 AM

I hope I never have to shoot a human but if I ever have to, I dont want to injure the person.

Sechsgang 11-03-2012 11:05 PM

AR wise...if you want the best that you can always grow into its abilities...LaRue OBR or PredatAR...

Thx for the info guys---

I've done some shooting, and fell in love with a .45 1911 at the local range. I'm now trying to determine which one to pick up.

Rifle--- haven't had chance to shoot yet-- will spend more time soon

LARRY 11-26-2012 06:28 PM

I did my homework.

I have a Les Baer .45. Les Baer Custom Inc.

A JP Enterprises AR-15 rifle. JP Rifles

A Benelli shotgun. Benelli Shotguns | Benelli M2 Tactical

All super accurate which is what you want. A little more expensive but you're only buying three guns.

You'll outshoot everybody.

Some good and some really bad advice in this thread.

I'm glad you like the 1911, but if this is your first firearm, I would strongly suggest you to avoid the 1911 for now. The 1911 is a very accurate firearm, but it's maintenance intensive and honestly, not for a beginner. The 1911 requires a high maintenance cycles where recoil spring need to be replaced every 5000 rounds, and the gun needs to be kept pretty clean. Also, if you want a 1911 that runs reliably out of the box, expect to pay north of 3k for a semicustom maker! In addition, this doesn't even begin to touch on all the crap about reliable magazines for the 1911...ugh.

If you like the ergos of the 1911, then I would suggest you to check out the SW MP. It adopts many of the ergo benefits of the 1911 but without all the headache. I know of several folks that love and run their MPs hard.

As for the 9 versus 45 debate, I think it's absolutely silly to compare the two anymore. Anyone who claims that a 45 does more damage (note - I did not use "stopping power") hasn't kept up on the recent advancements on 9mm JHPs. One I strongly recommend is the 9mm HST.

ARs are a different thing all together...

There is a lot of information (both good and bad) out there. Always ask why and make sure your BS meter is on.

LARRY 11-27-2012 07:03 PM

You're right...9mm are great guns.

My Sig-Sauer 226 is awesome and from back in the day where you could load it up to 30 round mags.

Somebody here recommended the CZ75B...Man, are those things accurate and very inexpensive!

Christian 12-02-2012 06:34 PM

buy it once, get a wilson or ed brown .45, very nice pieces

LARRY 12-05-2012 01:00 PM

True.

Nemic 01-15-2013 07:34 PM

For sure go to a local range and try out as many as you can.

Something not that common (in the US) but very respected is the Czech made CZ75 SP-01 Shadow. It's a target 9mm, and its really accurate and easy to use. It also has an underslung 1913 rail - for mounting a flashlight / laser if so desired.

Ultimately you need to choose the gun that's right for you, and until you fire a selection you won't really know. Don't rush into things though, take your time and buy the right one.
