That BMW V10 could be decent too.

I really don't trust Dinan after that video though. A 640hp BMW is never going to do 200mph in the standing mile. That is what the 1001hp, AWD Veyron does.
And they can make Nikasil and steel sleeves smoother then they are, but they don't for a reason. They purposefully create the hatch marks so the rings seat properly. This is also what honing is, it is creating the hatch marks so a new set of pistons and rings seats properly for power and reliability.

Under revs, the S85 sounds great and you would have a considerably more reliable powerplant relative to some of the other suggestions in this thread. How much does your car weigh Jon? Around 600hp may be a wise choice as too much more could be unmanageable without an expensive traction control system. That or a combo of amazing skill and nerves of steel would be necessary

If you want a great engine that is going to be reliable and drive-able in your lightweight car and not cost a small fortune, here's an option:

Katech built the engines for the GT1 Corvette C6.Rs that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of SpA, etc. List of customers

Send them an LS7, and they send it back to you with 600-750 HP depending on what you want done. Naturally aspirated or forced induction. Prices start at $9,400 + the engine. Engine packages

Yeah, anything over 1000+bhp will be overkill in a car like this. I really like the idea of using the engine from the Caterham Levante, and when combined with your cars low weight, it would be incredible. They would also probably be able to push it over 600bhp. Another great option would be the lightweight yet powerful and high-revving V-8 found in the Caparo T1. You have one hell of a decision!

If you were to go this route then maybe you could fit one of these sequential transmissions made by EMCO. I think a built LS7 would also be very reliable, which is key to completing Gumball rallies in this car. Plus, this combo would be very fast on a track.

I love that car and that sound. That is the 20B, 2L, 3-rotor, 450hp. You gotta go big though; R26B, 2.6L, 4-rotor, 700hp(the one from the 787B racer)
That is the best power/weight engine choice here. And probably gnarliest sounding. The Rebellion R1k is one of the few cars that the looks would match the sound.

IMHO, stuffing a beast like that in a flyweight like this project would render it nearly useless at anything below 100 mph.

Another consideration might be the Supercharged V-8 from RS Performance used in the Caterham Levante.

550hp and weighs almost nothing. Impressive bit of kit.

Check out their website RS Performance
The RS makes a lot of power for its weight, but it has 2 problems. Reliability and streetability.
It is a high strung race engine. This is why Ariel decided against using it. The original Ariel Atom V8 used the RS but it was too problematic so they switched to the equally light, more reliable, more friendly 3.0L V8 from Hartley.

You're right, the downshifts are ridiculous
