Be Nice to the Dragon

A lot of out-of-towners ask me about the Tail of the Dragon, an 11-mile stretch of road with 318 curves. While yes, it is an amazing road with unbelievable views, it is also called the dragon for a reason.

Last night a friend of mine and another guy decided to complete a night run; friend was in his NSX and the other guy was driving the car attached via photo. It was an '08 Mitsubishi Evo X.

He lost control, went over the embankment and an hour later it had burned down to the frame. Total loss. Thankfully he wasn't injured.

Lesson: if you decide to "tame" the dragon be careful. Scenes like this are fairly common.

Holy crap! Glad he's okay!

Agreed, I've run the tail on my Aprilia's and Ducati's for years. It will bite you.

Sorry to hear about your buddies car, and thank God he's okay.

X2 I didn't know about the Tail of the Dragon until after I joined TS and have wanted to try it but plan to keep it within safe limits.

Why? Are you going to put in a good word to the local Mitsubishi dealer for him?

Evo was red.

Gotcha. Night runs aren't the smartest . .

I've got a bunch of Crossfire buddies going out there next week. I'll show them this thread.

One of my buddies that works for Porsche NA Corporate said it's the best road he's ever driven. He's originally from Seattle, WA and has run many roads there, most of which were probably more scenic than the Dragon.

On occasion, my wife works the trauma bay at our local Level 1 center and she's seen what the Dragon can do. Tell your friends to go at it with enthusiastic caution, if there ever was such a thing.
