Pictures from my visit to the Porsche Museum - Spring 2011 On our recent trip to Europe, I was able to talk my wife into a little side trip to the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. Such an amazing place that is set in an architecturally stunning building with emphasis for the exhibits being on the machines themselves. I am a huge fan of vintage race cars, especially vintage 9 series Porsche racers so needless to say, I was in heaven. Also being a fan of 356's and early 911's, seeing so many variants in both street and race trim was the icing on the cake. I took these pics with my wy wife's Coolpix, point and shoot, so I apologize in advance for the poor quality of the pictures. I hope the pics capture some of the sheer engineering beauty that lies within each one of these amazing machines. If you are a Porsche fan and have not visited the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, then this is aimple a "must see." Words cannot describe what it is like being among so many iconic cars, each of them maintained in perfect working condition. I was told by one of the museum directors that every car there is kept in perfect running condition and are driven regularly. Even the 917/30 and the unbelievable 1948 "Porsche Number 1". Enjoy! http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0159.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0160.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0162.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0165.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0161.jpg |
Here is the first 8 cylinder Porsche race car. AMAZING. This deserves sticky IMO. Green 356, 904 GTS, and 911 RS FTW And that 964 Turbo S flatnose in red in the background!! |
The 917's...I was speechless and in awe of being in the presence of so many awesome, iconic racing machines in one place. http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0214.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0211.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0209.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0203.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0202.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0199.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0198.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0205.jpg http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0207.jpg |
Great shots E!! |
Thanks for sharing these pictures, Eric. It's time for me to go next! :D |

^Thanks Jason. It took my wife two hands to lift the 956. I could lift it with one hand :) http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0193.jpg |

One last pic to share. An absolutely stunning 550 variant being worked on in the shop on the ground floor of the museum. In the cafe, there is a wall of glass where you can look in at all of the cars being restored/maintained for the museum. I would imagine this is also where high-end restoration work is done for customers. There were several amazing cars in the shop the day I was there, but none more amazing than this one. http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCN0155.jpg |

Amazing shots E! Looks like a great place to spend some time. |
Great stuff Eric. Thank you wife for us all for allowing you to go and take pics for us all! |
Amazing!!! Whenever I finally make it overseas this will definately be on the top of my tour list |
Hi E, Awesome photos, very jealous of your experience. I need something like that to take my mind off the finals... :D Cheers, Nik |
FAAAAWK!!! That 917 lineup is amazing! So much history, I am in awe! Thanks for sharing the pics Eric, and I'd also like to personally thank you for inquiring about the special "Porsche Exclusive" book for me. I'll find a way to get my hands on a copy eventually :) |
Eric, epic! Thanks so much for sharing with us. For someone not as familiar with the history of the 917's as you are, I was in awe looking through your pics; can't imagine your emotions being there. |
What an experience. Maybe one day! |
that is just epic! great shots, gotta say I've never seen that green before on the 993tt. Thanks for sharing |
Awesome pics bro. I think I may have to take a trip there now. :D Oh yeah, this will be a Sticky now in the Porsche Forum. |
Great shots! Thanks for posting. |
absolutely awesome thread! love that yellow 964 turbo S |
Great stuff, Eric! I really enjoyed seeing the museum from your perspective. Any idea if some of these cars will be at the Wine Country Classic? |
Great pictures, I really need to make the pilgrimage for myself. |
Very nice pictures, I must've taken 1000 when I was there! It was a truly amazing experience that I hope every Porsche enthusiast gets the opportunity to enjoy. I'm curious as to what was on display behind the Turbo S's on the rotating bases (if you're facing them like you were to take the pics) as when I went that area was sectioned off in preparation for the 918 exhibit (which was opening the week after I went, DOH!) Was there a 918 there? http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/144/img2727o.jpg |
Also, did you park in the underground parking garage? I started dying laughing out of disbelief when I rounded the corner and saw this staring at me: http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/2953/img2625c.jpg There were also the Rothmans rally car, the actual gray GT3RS used on the cover of the brochure (same license plate) and other amazing cars parked in the garage like it was no big deal...guess they ran out of space upstairs?! :hilarious: I can't WAIT to go back again this year! Thanks again for posting your pics, it's got me fired up and my trip is 4 months away! Matt |
Incredible, I must go. |

Thanks again for posting your pics, it's got me fired up and my trip is 4 months away! Matt We parked down below on the first level, and did not see anything exotic or crazy in the garage. The Rothman's Dakar 959 was upstairs displayed next to the Martini 911 SC RS rally car. When were you there? Which was your favorite? My personal favorites were the 1948 "Number 1", the 917/30, the early 908 that looked sort of like a 550 spyder (I forget the model name) and of course the "Dream Team" lineup of 917's. |
E is a rather large man. |
I'll be going to the Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca in October. Porsche is expected to bring just about every significant model in their entire historical lineup to this event. I can't miss this..and Eric you shouldn't either! |

Love this http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/4426/img2663n.jpg My dad has a very cool painting of one of these at LeMans with the carnival rides in the background so it's always been a favorite: http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/8603/img2661d.jpg But if I had to pick one, I would say this: (to give you guys a size reference I'm approximately 5'8" and 155lbs.) http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/4838/img2681sq.jpg The whole museum had me in awe honestly. It's hard to describe how awesome it felt to see such historic cars that have been the cars of my dreams up close and personal and with no barrier between me and them. Inspecting some of them closely made you wonder how sane the people were who drove them at the speeds they did! Did you happen to go to the dealership across the street? There were some very cool cars over there when I wandered over including a yellow CGT as well as what appeared to be a Porsche mechanic in a black CGT taking it around the roundabout and out of the center; the sound of the exhaust was intoxicating! Also saw this on the autobahn leaving Stuttgart (possibly an employee headed home after a long day of work?) Absolutely GORGEOUS! http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/2236/img2746o.jpg One thing I definitely want to do next time is see about a factory tour. |
Wow, very cool Eric! Didn't you just want to camp out in there? I like the 904 and the green and white Carrera the best. |
Beautiful shots. I take it the 993 GT1 in the parking garage is the one in the OP's shots in front of the GT1-98? Does the museum still have their white 993 GT1 roadcar or is it hidden away in someone's collection like the member on here who has the other one? |
