Probably for the masses since most people have no fark'n clue how to drive. So I would agree with you. But for me; keep it RWD.

But in WRC AWD made everything else obsolete.... So in real world conditions when driving in anger AWD will make the difference. Of course in optimal conditions I would always choose mid engine RWD.
