Ferrari's Fernando Alonso has received a ten million euro life insurance from team sponsor Santander, which focuses particularly on the Spaniard's thumbs. The banking group, which joined the Italian team this season to begin a 5-year partnership, announced the policy near Spanish capital city Madrid on Monday morning.

'Fernando Alonso's thumbs are safe,' reads an official press release from the Scuderia, with the insurance policy's total of €10m equating to £8.6m. The press conference was attended by several members of both parties, including Alonso, at the Banco Santander headquarters in Boadilla del Monte.

"Being at risk in my profession made me understand that protection is a fundamental aspect," Fernando began. "I knew that Santander is the best bank in the world but now I have also discovered that they are leaders in insurance, so I could only choose one of the best possible partners in this field."

Alonso now looks towards next weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, the first of two races in the country this season. "We haven't always gained what we could have, according to our potential, but we're fighting for the title and this is what counts more than anything else," he continued, adding that engine failures in Malaysia and China are no cause for concern.

"I'm not worried at all; I know that the team is working hard to fix them and I'm convinced that I'll have a reliable and strong engine available, just as I know that they are giving it their all in Maranello to introduce several new solutions for the F10 for the Spanish Grand Prix."

Fans in Spain can also watch out for a new Santander television commercial starring Alonso, recorded on Monday and set to be aired during next weekend's race from Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya.

That seems awfully.... specific. I imagine an injury to his eyes, ears, arms, legs, (insert vital organ here) would pretty much end his career, so why the focus on the thumbs? He doesn't even use him for his funny 'I just won the race' dances.

i dunno if your joking Pmac, but it was a publicity stunt, could have insured anything, but guess they went with thumbs for the stupidity.

My left nut is insured for $200K. Right nut is only insured for $150K though.
