Willow Springs Track Day Pics

I was out at Willow Springs yesterday with Fastrack Riders. I had not been out to Willow in at least a year and a half and it was my first time on the R1 at Willow. The weather was very nice, sunny skies, abut 70 degrees with a slight breeze. Previously, the fastest lap time I had turned at Willow was a 1:33.8. That was back when I was going to Willow about 3 times a month on my R6. I never got below a 1:38 on the ZX-10. By my second or third session on the the R1 I had already done a 1:32. My fastest lap for the day was a 1:31.6, and I was consistently in the 1:32's and 1:33's. I couldn't be happier with this bike. Here are some pics:

That is so frickin' cool. I've always wanted to try that. Amazing guts and skill, you have. I would love to know what it feels like to track a bike.

And great photos too!

Curious, what do pro sport bike racers get on that track time-wise?

Thanks D. It truly is an amazing rush to ride a bike on track, especially a very high speed track like Willow. Lap record on a bike is 1:19. The fastest club racers and the pros who come out to Willow once in a while are running in the 1:21-1:22 range.

I've watched the guys and gals ride bikes at our track, man when the loose it, it often brings out the ambulance. I do ride and I would like to try it though...

That looks pure adrenaline, I get a rush just by looking at it. Is your knee pad supposed to scrape the track, because it looks sooo close. What average speed do you get to on that track?

Ara 03-19-2008 02:08 AM

Thanks guys. Jim, you should try it. The track is relatively safe compared to the streets. ss7, the knee pucks are designed to scrape the ground. I burned through 3 pucks on my right knee yesterday, and even managed to put a hole in my leathers. As for average speed, given my lap times, the average speed is about 96 mph.

Whoa you are a big guy... that bike looks tiny compared to you. Looks like a total blast.

Ara 03-19-2008 12:08 PM

Haha, you should see pics of me on the R6. I really look big on that bike.

Super D 03-19-2008 12:26 PM

What are the pucks made out of? I was going to guess my mother-in-law's overcooked steak, but although effective that would be improbable.

Geez, 1:19, that's insane.

You ever lay it down on a track?
