Teams might use 'mini KERS' at some GP's

Some teams may be planning a partial deployment of KERS in 2009, according to a report in the Spanish press.

The sports newspaper Marca claims that some teams have calculated that because the benefit of the energy-reuse technology will be limited at some circuits, it may be wiser not to use a heavy and fully-functioning KERS unit all of the time.

However, a scaled-back version of the technology - presumably lighter and smaller - might be fitted to the cars simply to provide an acceleration boost off the grid at the start.

"That is something that could be done," Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali is quoted as saying.

But if they're limited to 400kJ per lap of energy storage, would the teams be allowed to charge up the system prior to the start of the race? That seems like there should be a rule against that. Either way, until KERS is required, it's nice that teams have a choice whether or not to run the system or not.

I can definately see the benefit on the start, and it will definately put more importance on the warm up lap to fully charge the system.

2009 should be interesting!
