It's great to see this subforum in motion!

This is my current bike for around the city.

Does anyone have experience swapping out forks? I'd like to go solid up front. What info/measurements do I need to know to before buying?

RE: solid fork, you need to find out your current fork length and order one the has the same effective length. Common are 80mm, 100mm and 120 mm. Make sure what you buy uses the same brake mounts, c brake or disc.

Finally you'll need to make sure you remove the crown race from the old fork and install it on the new one.

Roads are pretty shitty out here vltsai, they get destroyed every winter from the plows. I'm about 6'2". Thanks for the advice, definitely something to go off of. Looking to get going in August.

I'm thinking like...carbon, with enough clearance to fit wider tires to allow for you to deal with the crappy roads. Something to think about is any of the models that the companies release for the Paris-Roubaix. The race includes several sections where riders have to deal with cobbles, so the frames have to be comfy and allow for fat tires so that they don't get destroyed. BMC unveiled the GF01 (Gran Fonda) for that purpose. Now, that would be really, really far out of your price range but it's along the lines of something you might want to consider. I guess the main thing is the fatty tire clearance (25-28c) to allow you to ride on really crappy roads without worrying about flats. Look at like...60cm frame size? Rough estimate. But you'd definitely have to get fit first. I'd go to a bike shop around you with these things in mind and ask them about how stiff some frames feel, what tires can they allow, etc etc. And then hit up Craigslist or online sales.

@Maxemus, HED! Let's see that bike!

Sub'd.

I've got a few high end mountain bikes that I need to replace soon as they are getting 5-6ish years old (with 2010ish suspension and wheels). Which as lots of us know, is ancient in bike speak though.

These days in the city though I primarily ride around a Milwaukee fixed frame. I don't give a sh!t what people say, I have a bloody blast riding the thing.

Good to see this thread up and running, I'll make sure to post pics when I'm not half drunk and needing sleep.
