Porsche 960 Project Dead?

Chris Harris met up with Porsche's Research & Development chief, and unfortunately he came up with this regarding the mid engined sports car...

"We have always a lot of ideas, at the moment I think this is a good idea but it's not the near future. We've just launched a new 991. Now we have Boxster and Cayman, then we have 911 variants, turbo, GT3 and so on, then the 918 next year. I think we have so many sports cars now that we don't have any need for a model above the 911 GT2 though."

Porsche make me sad these days, sad.

He's talking about the "550", sub-Boxster 4-cyl car (they killed it over a year ago, dont know why it's news again now).

960 is a go.

But he referred to no need for a model "above the GT2"...

I suspect that this is just smoke in order not to "distract" sales from upcoming models ( GT3, GT3RS, 918).

I actually interpret this as good news (from the position of a 911 enthusiast), because a 960 slotted above the GT2 would mandate that Porsche limit the GT2 powerplant. Not that this makes any sense from an engineering standpoint but marketing the cars would require this.

Hi wtdoom,

Hope your C-GT is well, hey, remember what I said in the other 960 thread..I always said, I dont believe in it, people were posting some links were apparently it has been confirmed, now there is the pretty clear statement that there will nothing above a GT2 except the 918.

Nobody believed me..here you go.

But Porsche should have built the 960 instead of the stupid (but good looking) 918 !

Hatz said "but it's not the near future".He did not say it was dead.
We will now find out just how far is the "distant future".
All other sources say that the project continues to be evaluated... along with the Sports Tourismo concept (which has also recently pronounced "dead" in one of the magazine articles).
