Many new racing GT cars have this system. Its a development of the sequential gearbox where you only have to pull forward and backwards to change gears, and you can do so without the clutch. The clutch is there for launching the car, and getting it of the line, and some still use it when downshifting. In the new generation of this system, the clutch is still there, but the shifting action has moved from pulling a lever, to paddles behind the steering wheel - this means the driver doesnt have to move his hands for gear changes.

So, it is without a doubt a true sequential gearbox with ignition cut off on changes, and shifting with paddles. Including software helping with throttle inputs on downchanges. Such a gearbox is sweet - it has a really really raw feel, but is quite easy to use thanks to the new paddle systems being used.

I figured as such. I have a buddy with an R and his was converted to that system. I presume that this is not fully a PDK set up like most expected, but close?

If it has a clutch, it has nothing to do with PDK. It is a true racing sequential box with straight cut gears, and unlike anything you will find on the street.

Here is an example of a sequential gearbox in a racing application. Notice how he pulls backwards to change up a gear, and pushes the lever forward to go down one gear. It is essentially the same kind of gearbox, but with paddles. This means there is a fully functional clutch used for getting the car of the line, and sometimes used when downshifting. The clutch can be operated when changing up, but doesnt need to, because of the ignition cut off in racing application. The new Ferrari 458 GT3 car uses the same system as the Porsche, and so does most GT cars running in the ILMS for example.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup officially unveiled

Porsche has officially unveiled the 2013 911 GT3 Cup at the company's "Night of Champions” celebration.

Based on the upcoming 911 GT3(...)

Motivation is provided by a 3.8-liter flat-six engine that develops 460 HP (338 kW) which is 10 HP (7 kW) more than its predecessor. It is connected to a six-speed "dog-type" transmission that is operated via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

According to Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard, “The new 911 GT3 Cup is much easier to drive at the limit. The car is excellently balanced. The new axle geometry is enormously positive for the handling. Apart from that, the new Cup 911 is great fun to drive.”
