Anyone ever owned a 90's model S class? What was this used for? Phone? Trip computer? Appeared in both S class sedan and coupe. http://images.cars.com/supersized/DM...96/1502.23.jpg And also, on the 600 model coupe/sedan were 2 little metal rods (circled in pics) on each side of the trunk , about 2 inches long that popped out everytime you started the car. What were they? Antennaes? http://i50.tinypic.com/ifzka1.jpg |
Im not sure on your questions but that thing is hot! Are those 3 peice aero 1 amg wheels? |

Those pop-up rods are probably to hold flags for ambassadors and such. |
The "trunk rods" pop up when the vehicle is in reverse, as a way for people to gauge the length of the trunk for reversing into parking spots. This system was replaced by early sonar-aided backup systems. The system in the dash is a car phone. |
^^^^smarty pants. |
I ran two of these - an S500L and an S500 - to over 250k miles each. All I ever did - apart from servicing, tyres and brakes - was replace one Lambda probe. They were the last of the bullet proof Mercedes before the long decline. As has been said, the rods at the back were to let you know where the back of the car was when reversing, but they were dropped in '96. In most S Class the pop-up lid on the dash was simply extra storage. |
Thank you guys! They were indeed bulletproof :) |
I love old MBs. If I had some money stashed for repairs (damn med schooL!) I would so buy this 500E that has been for sale near me with only 98k. A MB/Porsche collaboration is perfect. 90s MBs are awesome |
a strong car, destined to be a future classic. |
