What is the state of SSD's?
 

I don't have a lot of experiences with them.

I have two laptops at home that I am thinking of getting SSD's for.

The first one is my ex-workhorse IBM T42p. 5 years and going strong. I gave it to my wife after she saw how much better it was than her Toshitbox.

The second is my IBM T61p.

I know that the T42p needs the PATA version, and my T61p is compatible with the 3GB SATA.

On Amazon people seems like like Calvalry, Patriot, and OCZ.

What have you guys been using?

Also, I also found this link on the configuration changes that you need to do for SSD's. Anyone found these changes useful?

Still too expensive for me. But damn cool.

The only place I see it making sense is if you get a Macbook air with the SSD. That way you get a unit with zero moving parts and an aluminum case, which should be essentially indestructible.

Thankpad T series have a roll cage inside the casing.

The main reason I would get one is hard drive longevity and battery life.

I have not been able to keep a 7200rpm laptop hard drive running for longer than 1.5 year. I move around a lot at work, and at that speed, with the heat, and the vibration, that's about all I can get out of them.

Only consider the X25-M or X25-D

The rest are bunk because the integrated memory controllers.

They are expensive...but the load times will blow your mind.

What do you mean?

I have a Dell D430 for now 2 years and a Mini 9 for about 9 months. Both with SSD. The Mini 9 has no drives and not even a fan, no moving parts. It is tethered through a bluetooth port to my cellphone for I-Net. The Mini 9 goes with me everywhere. SSD really only makes sense if you use it mainly for browsing, for storage you should then use an external HD drive. I even have a thumb drive with 64GB. So the SSDs I have are only 64GB. Which gives you enough room for OS, updates and your standard programs but not much room to store goobs of pics, movies etc.
