My BMW M3 Detail (96 images, full step-by-step) Well, this is the mega-thread I've been promising everyone. This is the detail process on my 2005 E46 M3 (needless to say, I had lots of fun). There is still some stuff I'd like to go over (rock chips, etching on the roof that I couldn't polish out so I called it quits as I didn't want to go after the clear coat too aggressively on the roof of all places) but so far, I'm pretty satisfied. Truth be told though, 99% of the general populace can't see what I'm fixated on, so take that it for what it's worth. Anyhow, it's important to note that I got the car in great condition, other than the above mentioned flaws. The interior and exterior are absolutely great - practically new. It's obvious that the previous owner took great care of this vehicle. This is basically a step-by-step overview of everything. Enjoy! After Wash & Claying Gunther, the name my dad has christed the M3, was washed with Zymol Clear using a natural lambswool mitt and two Griott's Ultimate Buckets (one for the Clear, the other for rinsing), and dryed using Moe's microfiber drying towel. Gunther was then treated to a claying using Zymol Lehm Klay & Lube. Afterwards, he was washed again to remove residue & spots from a freak rain that hit momentarily. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3219/...8bca87.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3280/...0a38bc.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3038/...b051f1.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/...ce6f1e.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3222/...ed3a81.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3087/...a13311.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3039/...096042.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3024/...92f538.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3030/...21435a.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3173/...6725ec.jpg?v=0 |
Dumb little spot: this is actually underneath the clearcoat. Why? Oh well; a V-CSL bootlid will solve the problem eventually. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3293/...450e27.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3292/...2480e6.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3197/...c9b276.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3225/...69d584.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3194/...27eacf.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/...5f4db8.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3017/...8bd1a1.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3078/...a6ac8e.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3224/...1765e6.jpg?v=0 |

Prep: Mask it off! Taping things is always fun, fun fun. I have to be borderline OCD; I ended up redoing numerous pieces because I wasn't satisfied, but it works out in the end. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3153/...6abd8d.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3047/...7504ab.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3129/...2a676e.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3016/...0792e0.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3034/...ae657f.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3096/...1c9a69.jpg?v=0 |
Polish Because of very light micro-marring, swirls, and rain etchings, I decided to polish Gunther. A FLEX unit was used with a white Lake Country CCS pad and Menzerna Nano polish. Things were done lightly, with light to moderate pressure (when needed) and about 200-250 RPM for the majority of the process. I spent extra time on the roof, bumper, and rear diffuser (with the roof and rear diffusor still not up to a level I'd find acceptable). http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3157/...0c2da4.jpg?v=0 HD Cleanse After polishing, I went over the car with Zymol HD Cleanse to prepare for Zymol Concours. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3126/...e81abe.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3121/...268d6f.jpg?v=0 |
Post-Wax As mentioned earlier, I opted to use Zymol Concours. Fun stuff; Moe was right - applying it by hand is almost therapeutic (and it feels GREAT to feel the smooth paint). Quite the experience; almost worth the cost for that alone. Regrettably, the sun was not willing to cooperate, so these photos aren't the greatest. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3157/...0c2da4.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3079/...d6f4bf.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3140/...a3c626.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/...d7ff69.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3175/...4770b9.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3048/...6b8d70.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3109/...e99b37.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3280/...8ebfb6.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3100/...2b5172.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3046/...5ac5f4.jpg?v=0 |
