2007 Rolls Royce Phantom Paint Correction and Detail

Glistening Perfection Paint Correction and Detail

I’m often asked what makes one detailer stand apart from a crowd. The answer is simple: Pride in Workmanship. The philosophy is simple but the execution requires patience, experience, and refined technique. Unless you work on high-end automobiles, you cannot truly understand the scope of the labor involved. The old saying “careful what you wish for” applies here. Many detailers want to work on a Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Bugatti, but how many of them actually realize the sheer amount of labor, risk, and experience required to work on every material on these works of art. It’s not as simple as leather, plastic, paint, etc. We’re dealing with carbon fiber, high-grade aluminum, magnesium, rare and expensive leather, wood, chrome, etc. In a given automobile, there may be 20 different substrates you need to understand and work on. So the next time you consider saving a few hundred dollars on a detail, consider how expensive it will be to repaint a door on a Ferrari Enzo, replace a carbon fiber wing on a Carrera GT, or repair the aluminum radiator grille on a Rolls Royce Phantom.

Glistening Perfection has been educating clients since 1995 on what a true detail done by a real professional is all about. When I started this company, I didn’t do it because I wanted to make lots of money; I did it because I love cars and wanted to be around them for the rest of my life. Now that we’re growing rapidly, this philosophy still holds true. I detail each car with the notion that you’re only as good as your last detail. We all have our off days, and I’m not impervious to that, but at the end of the day, the goal is to deliver a product that exceeds the client’s expectations and launches his/her ownership experience to higher heights.

This particular Rolls Royce Phantom had issues with the finish. Like most enthusiasts, the client had his detailer wipe down the finish with a detail spray and microfiber towel. The issue was since this Phantom was stored in a warehouse, most of the dust and debris would land back on the finish. When the detailer went to wipe everything down, he was actually marring and scratching the finish by rubbing the microscopic rocks into the ceramic paint. The new technology of ceramic clear coats found on Rolls Royce, Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, etc. is excellent at resisting scratches, but it does have its limitations.

After almost 30 hours, over several days, the Rolls Royce was brought back to her glory. As challenging as this Phantom was, it was a joy to see the final result. The client was reluctant to drive it to Vegas but I encouraged him that this is why I detail these cars. I want clients to enjoy the experience and as soon as the car is washed, it’ll look as beautiful as it does now. So he did take it to Vegas and the compliments he received from the valet and those around, made it worthwhile.

The wheels are cleaned (40 min)

Wheels, wheel wells, and tires are cleaned using a pH-balanced all-natural wheel cleaner using a gentle horse hair wheel brush. A non-caustic, acid-free, chlorine-free citric oil-based cleaner is used to further clean the wheels and the tire. Build-up of inferior tire conditioner in all the lettering and detail of the tire are removed.

The condition of the paint is examined and the proper action is planned (25 min)

Paint is measured for thickness to make sure it's a good candidate for paint correction. Also during this step, test panels are performed to figure out the proper polish, pad, and speed combination to achieve the desired results.

The paint is corrected from routine wiping with detail spray yielding clean, swirl-free, legitimate finish (600 minutes)

You can see the surface scratches close to the windshield

A closer view. The paint lacks definition since the clearcoat is scratched and light is refracting instead of reflecting
