Porsche Cancels Sub-Boxster Model

Due to current economic conditions in Europe, Porsche has canned the highly anticipated sub-Boxster model. We reported last month CEO Matthias Mueller was quoted as saying in a German magazine that the introduction of the entry-level roadster to its model lineup would be delayed amid worries that the car could dilute the brand's image, but our sources reveal to us that this project is officially dead.

Despite this bit of bad news, VW's engineering boss, Uli Hackenberg, stated that the Bluesport project is still very much alive in a report with EVO earlier this month.

Can't decide if that's bad news or not. Given VW, Audi and Porsche were planning models from the same platform, there was a good chance that this car would have too much negative reaction based on comparisons to those competing lines. Sort of a 914-like buying acceptance, regardless of whether the car was any good.

It's a good platform/ model car for VW to produce, maybe marketed as built in conjunction with Porsche?

I kind of wanted to see this come to light, a 914-ish revival could have been fun to see?

It probably would be a fun car, but I'm more interested in Porsche resources going towards the higher end of the market: new mid-engine GT2-topper or 2-door 928. Instead of higher quantities of lower priced Porsches on the roads, I'm of the opinion to see the brand step it up that much more.

The Boxster & Cayman are the perfect place to welcome new members to the Porsche brand. This new model would forever be subjected to comparisons to Miatas, 370Zs, Genesis Coupes, Toyobarus much less it's VW & Audi cousins. That's not the best place for the brand find itself competing in.

ghey, but I probably would not have fit in it any way

Hmmmm .. maybe Porsche is afraid the baby Boxster would start replacing sales of more higher priced vehicles they offer

i agree porsche needs to go up the caliber. mclaren and AMG are entering into that competition. porsche needs to be there.

I was looking forward to this --

Maybe Audi will step in with an R4 or something.

I think is good news.

Also if VW buys Porsche and Ducatti this year. I think they have other brands in the group to make that car segment7idea/size/thing possible. Maybe a two seater A1-A3 cabrio...
