if someone wont accept my gifts, i certainly wont accept theirs.

never said i won't accept them, im just not comfortable receiving them. call it a failing if you like but that's how i am. if someone gives me something i feel indebted to them, i know that's not the spirit in which they gave but then i feel compelled to give them something better so that we are even in my mind.

There's more than one school of thought on this.

I understand your line of logic, but let me assure you if I am in the position to the buy the kid I don't have yet a car like that when he/she is 21... I absolutely will not do it.

You raise some valid points no doubt, but there is a line where excess truly becomes excess.

For what it's worth I grew up well, the difference is my father told me "you want it, you earn it". I have never found near the amount of gratification/value in things I have been given compared to what I get out of the things I earn. I had to be provided with the opportunity to earn it to know that. Like I said, different schools of thought.

I completely agree with you on this. O so few years ago when I was a wee little boy, My parents gave me every single fricken thing I wanted. Once the shit hit the wall and I grew up and realized if I wanted something I was gonna have to work to get it, well, now that I work to get what I want I find way more satisfaction than my friends who are simply given the same thing.

For example many of my friends who are given their first cars....audis....bimmer...whatever, they don't care for them. I spend many hours a week making sure my car is perfect.

Meanwhile not too far away, another tycoon donates 75% of his money ($2B of personal assets) to, not his kid... but flood relief!
What a dilemma.
Gold key + Koenigsegg for my son's 22nd, or saving thousands of people?
