Most overrated player. Without Xavi and Iniesta behind him he's worthless.

Really?! overrated really?! I can understand how you might want someone else to win but please quantify how you see him as overrated; look at the titles and accolades won over the past season look at what SAF and other legends had to say about him. and if not him then who and on what grounds?

Just look at the World Cup 2010. He was nearly invisible. As I said, without the brilliant players that surround him he is not half as good. He might be a brilliant technican, but he is not someone like Xavi with eyes in the back of his head and a out of this world game reading ability. Xavi performs like a genius in the national team and Barca - Messi doesn't.

Apart from that I find that whole "Player of the Year"-Award is bullshit. Emphasizing single players in a game that is a team game after all?!

This is from the BBC link I placed...
Then there is also the issue of the World Cup - the greatest stage for Pele and Maradona.
In Messi's defence, it seems clear that club football, and especially the Champions League, has superseded the World Cup as football's main event.
Barcelona are clearly superior to Spain, for example. But, while Messi does not bring his club form into a World Cup, there will always be a question mark against him - not so much about his ability, but more about his temperament.
At Barcelona, he is the brightest cog in a wheel that spins with mechanical precision.
With Argentina, the wheel is always threatening to come off its axle. Can Messi flower in less fertile soil? Can he show the leadership to haul his compatriots in the right direction?
As the little man himself would say, he has only just started. He should have at least two World Cups ahead of him to silence the doubters. Plus a decade more in the Champions League.
The first seven years have been the aperitif. I can hardly wait for the main course.

I see your point but the Argentina National team is in shambles to say the least they should be better at the next world cup if Pastore proves to be the playmaker that he is claimed to be. Plus i dont understand why they wouldn't play Mascherano at CB since he has done such a great job for Barca there. Also I realize that the Ballon d'or is nothing if not subjective, yet Messi has been indispensable for Barca he scores, assists and always raises his level in the big matches as evidenced in the Champion's League final in '09 and '11. I guess what im trying to say is even though you have a point I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Messi in my opinion will without a doubt be remembered as one of the best footballers that have ever graced the pitch, once he hangs up his boots. But until then i hope he'll continue with his dazzling displays for many years to come.
