Dethroning Cohiba Behike as the cigar of the year in 2011 would be a tall task for any cigar. Ironically, it is a diminutive cigar that has taken the title of 2011 Cigar of the Year from the flagship of the Cuban brands. The La Flor De Cano Short Robusto, a 4 inch cigar with a diameter of 50/64 of an inch, continues the five year tradition in the United Kingdom of resurrecting the great Havana cigars of the past.
Modeled after the La Flor De Cano Short Churchill, an unbanded robusto sized cigar made only for a decade starting in the 80s and presently fetching an astounding $10,000 for a box of 25, the limited production of 1,200 boxes of Short Robustos is already disappearing from the shelves of British retailers. And unlike the prior regional edition cigars made for the United Kingdom in years past, the Short Robusto has been in such demand in England that is has not yet found its way to the duty free retailers in the United Kingdom.
Blended to exact recipe of the Short Churchill with the assistance of a female roller in Havana's La Corona factory who distinctly remembered the blend, the Short Robusto boasts honey sweet flavors and a rare talcum powder finish reminiscent of the great Cuban cigars of old. Intended to be part of the United Kingdom's 2010 regional program, the meticulous marketing staff of Hunters and Frankau, the exclusive importer of Cuban cigars for the United Kingdom, held back the release of these cigars until England's 2011 Summer Party in order to precisely duplicate the hallmark green color of the logos on the boxes of this small but memorable brand.
The release of a short robusto by the United Kingdom, rather than a cigar large in size like their prior contributions to the regional program, is consistent with recent marketing strategy of Habanos, S.A., to release smaller cigars that are more sophisticated and complex in taste. This strategy targets the more discerning smoker who is short of time and short on places to enjoy a fine Havana cigar.
