Another Radar Detector Hardwire (Escort 9500 smartcord)
#12
This is a great post. I followed it today to install an Escort 9500ix.
I like my unit right above the Chrono in the center dash so nothing blocks it and it is more or less out of my line of sight. I made a few mods to the install notes:
1 - Smartcord with Remote on it. I set the remote on the left side of the dash at the base of the front roof pillar. This was a handy spot; easy to see and reach the mute button, and I could route the power wiring down to the fuse box as shown and the radar connecting cable between the pillar and the dash and then snake it down between the windshield and the dash. So far the remote seems happy to stay there firmly without using the included velco to hold it down.
The phone connector wire to the 9500ix is really long, so I folded it about four times and tire wrapped it every four to five inches to create a long, flat bundle that still was easy to push down between the dash and windshield out of sight with only the tale coming up at the center speaker to attach the detector.
2 - I also got some female 1/4 connectors at Radio shack that match the male connector on the Smartcord. I replaced the connector on the Fuse Tap with that so I could keep the Smartcord fully intact and easily disconnect it from the fuse tap if I want to.
3 - There's actually enough clearance in the "hinge holes" on the fuse panel cover to snake the Smartcord power connector through. So I didn't need to make the small hole in the fuse panel surround. It takes a little care closing the fuse cover, but not bad at all really.
Tie Wraps - Home Depot
Fuse Tap - NAPA Autoparts
1/4 in. fully insulated M/F quick connectors - Radio Shack.
It works great and looks great.
Thanks so much to those who sorted this out - I really like that I didn't have to make any mods to the car at all and that I could do it myself.

Well, hat's off to you - I would have never managed this without your post or even thought of it. I'd have paid Porsche service god knows what to do something I would have probably been less satisfied with. This way I have exactly what I want.

May I resurrect this? Hopefully, someone is still paying attention to this thread.
Just got a '12 GTS. Had my V1 hardwired into my now departed 996GT3, and would like to do the same in the GTS.
Looking at the pics, and not being an EE, I am not clear on what wire(s) and/or fuse tap I should use.
The pic #4 seems to have a fuse attached to the fuse tap. Am I seeing this right? I have found fuse taps, but none that will accept a piggyback fuse. I would think the inline fuse holder would suffice.
I have the "telephone" cord, which is what I assume I will use to run to the V1. Do I just snip off one of the connectors, and crimp that onto the fuse tap? From where does the ground wire come (pic #8)? Or is the V1 install different than the 9500?
Also, looking at GeoT3's DIY posting at Rennlist, he indicates C1 is for awd, C5 for rwd. This is contrary to the above. Which is correct? Or will I find out by plugging in one then the other?
Thanks for any assist
