What is the wild looking "$$$" center-fin boat in post #38? Any details?
Thanks for the great pics!
Found the answer to my question:
""Hornet II" , 1930/1939 29'6" Gar Wood Step-hull Hydroplane. One of ten built by Gar Wood between 1929 and 1934 originally owned by Henry J. Kaiser who, after losing the Lake Championship race to Mercury, an all aluminum boat, sent "Hornet" to Howard Hughes who removed the wooden top and designed and built a custom aluminum top. "Hornet" never lost another race and when it was retired in 1953 it had won more races than any other boat in such a short time frame. It is powered by a Packard V-12 model 1A-1237 aircraft engine, one of the oldest Packard V-12's in existence. The engine restoration and installation was done by Sierra Boats, of Lake Tahoe and the aluminum top was restored by Air Pirates."

Additionally...
"Henry J. Kaiser, Sr along with his son, raced her on Lake Tahoe against his arch-rival R. Stanley Dollar Jr. Between 1935-39, Hornet took a number of 1st place trophies in Tahoe Yacht Club, Tahoe Tavern, and Chambers' Lodge regattas."
love the history of THE Lake speedboat culture.

Ah yes the MERCURY; another with a bit of history.
1926 34' Brewster Body Works raceboat, 495 hp 8cyl Mercruiser.
"She has an extensive race history on the east coast and in annual race regattas for Lake Tahoe Power Boat Club (aka TYC) MERCURY was owned by noted racers Leland Stanford Scott and R. Stanley Dollar Jr and was used as a camera boat for the filming of the 1951 flic " A Place in the Sun". She makes her home in the S boathouse at Sugar Pine Point State Park."
